The Alabama Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback Ty Simpson bounced back in a big way during the first half of the team’s Week 2 matchup at Bryant Denny Stadium against the University of Louisiana Monroe Warhawks.
The junior gunslinger set a University of Alabama school record for most consecutive completions to start a game connecting on all 17 of his passing attempts in a massive four touchdown first half.
Simpson became just the third FBS player to go 17/17 or better un a game since 1995. He joined former second overall pick, Zach Wilson of BYU, and Garrett Shrader, who accomplished the feat for Syracuse in 2022 against an FCS opponent.
The final completion of the half came on a 29-yard heave to transfer wide receiver Isaiah Horton on the sideline to make the score 42-0 before the end of the opening half.
The first year starter also ran for six points on his only carry of the game. It was a red zone carry from eight yards out on a designed quarterback power.
The Tide are silencing the haters in their first home game of the season, leading by six touchdowns heading into halftime with 30 minutes to play.
Sophomore quarterback Austin Mack has already received a drive, throwing for a touchdown on one of his three passing attempts. Fans expect to see true freshman Keelon Russell at some point during the second half.
Germie Bernard Hauls In 2 Touchdowns
Washington transfer Germie Bernard is beginning to look like one of the nation’s top wide receivers as he caps off the first half with a third touchdown catch that was then called back for an offensive pass interference call.
Had the 42-yard yard catch counted, his stat line after just 30 minutes of play would have read four catches for 109 yards and three touchdowns.
As it stands, the six-foot-one senior receiver has three catches for 67 yards and a pair of scores. Not a bad first half for the senior.
Last week in the embarrassing loss to Florida State, Bernard was one of the few bright spots. He hauled in a team high eight passes, racking up a team high 146 yards in the loss. He also got involved in the running game.
While star receiver Ryan Williams nurses a concussion, it appears this team will continue to lean on the impressive transfer.
Simpson’s Day Over After The Half
After leading his team to 42 unanswered first half points, quarterback Ty Simpson’s day was over after halftime. Head coach Kalen DeBoer did not give the junior a chance to build on his new school record, choosing to be safe rather than sorry and keeping his starter healthy.
Austin Mack was given the nod out of the half. The redshirt sophomore took the field just once in his true freshman season last year.
Mack stood behind many of the starting offensive lineman, and gave the ball to the starting backs. Bernard did not play after the first 30, but DeBoer elected to give a lot of role players some second half burn.
