Alan Shearer has provided his latest Premier League predictions ahead of another stacked weekend of top flight action.
In a battle between first and second, Arsenal head to Chelsea in another London derby with six points separating the two sides ahead of kick-off.
After another woeful week for Arne Slot, Liverpool head to West Ham United on Sunday in desperate need of a victory. An upset in east London will pile more pressure on the Dutchman who has presided over a run of nine defeats in 12 games in all competitions.
Manchester United’s unbeaten run came to a meek end on Monday against Everton and things don’t get any easier this weekend with a trip to Crystal Palace looming. United haven’t beaten the Eagles at Selhurst park in six years.
As ever, England legend and Betfair ambassador Alan Shearer has revealed his Premier League predictions to Metro.

Brentford vs Burnley
I think Brentford will have too much for Burnley, particularly at home. Last time out I think they were a tad unlucky, they missed a penalty. Igor Thiago had a penalty first half, scored, but then missed one with the last kick of the game, but I still think they’ll have too much for Burnley. If it was at Burnley, I’d say it would be a more difficult game, but because it’s at Brentford, then I can only see Brentford winning.
With Burnley it’s no different to what I thought, or what most people thought, I guess. The only surprise with the teams that have come up has been Sunderland. I expected Burnley to be in a relegation battle. I guess the manager did. I expected Leeds to be in a relegation battle. So, nothing really surprises me.
Prediction: Brentford win.
Sunderland vs Bournemouth
I think you’d probably see a different Bournemouth away from home, which is probably why I’m going to go for an away win. I think Sunderland, after their game last weekend, didn’t play that well. It was a poor result for them. I guess because of how well they’ve done it’s slightly different in terms of thinking how and where they should be so you’re now seeing it as a poor result being beaten away from home.
I think them being disappointed going to Fulham and getting beaten tells you how well they’ve done so far this season. Now, they’ve got the ideal opportunity to bounce back at home. They’ll be full of confidence, but I think Bournemouth are a team that can punish you, particularly when you’re at home, because the responsibility will be on Sunderland to attack, and the fans will want that, and it’ll be a great atmosphere again. I think that may work against them, against a really tricky Bournemouth side, particularly in forward positions, I think they might punish them on the break, and so I’m going to go for a Bournemouth win.
Prediction: Bournemouth win.
Man City vs Leeds
I guess if you want any game after two defeats, then you would want Leeds at home, and City have got that. I can’t see Leeds coming away with anything. I’d be amazed if they did. For Leeds, I think the defeat to Villa at home was a big defeat, because of the games that are coming up for them. If they got something out of that, draw or a win, then it might have been different, but I just think that piles more pressure on them in terms of the next three games.
Prediction: Man City win.
Everton vs Newcastle
I think Eddie will make changes again, I think he’ll revert back to Livramento and Hall. He’ll bring Woltemade back into the team. But this is a tough one to call, because Everton got a great result with 10 men at Old Trafford for a long part of the game. Idrissa Gueye will be out suspended.
Away from home Newcastle have really disappointed. I think that’s the conundrum they’ve added. Their home form is excellent. But I’ve said before about when you’re being rolled in front of your own fans at home, it’s difficult, you can’t give anything but 100%. When you drop a fraction in football, we know the differences that can make. Which obviously they have done and made too many errors away from home, that’s one of the reasons why they haven’t had the results and have been really poor. That has to change if they’re going to start and climb the table. We’ve seen what they’re capable of last week against Manchester City.
Now, they need to put that in again, just because it’s against Everton, just because it’s away from home shouldn’t make any difference. So, I’d be looking for them to replicate energy that they showed, and everything else about their performance against Man City, and we need to see that away from home as well.
This one will be really tight I think, and I’m going to go for a draw.
Prediction: Draw
Tottenham vs Fulham
Spurs got battered in the North London derby. Thomas Frank played the wrong system, and it was one of those, if you’re going get beat, then you’ve got to go down fighting, and they didn’t really. They didn’t offer anything.
He changed his system against PSG, went in with a more traditional 4-4-2. Obviously scored three goals, but conceded five. So, I guess that’s one thing. They went down fighting, at least, against the European champions. So, I guess he’ll stick to something similar with the system, because the demand at Tottenham will tell you they can’t be as timid as they were against their rivals last weekend, and that will have to change, so that’s why I’m going go for a home win.
Prediction: Tottenham win.
Crystal Palace vs Man Utd
The battle of the three or five at the back, the two wing-backs. Both teams play that system, and it’s working well for Crystal Palace. This is a really tough game for Man United on the back of a really poor performance against Everton.
Man United have injuries, Cunha was out the other day and Zirkzee came in, and it didn’t really work for them, but they’re going to lose players anyway when the African Cup Nation comes along. They’re going to lose Mbuemo and one or two others, so they’re going to have to cope with that and that’s where it will be tough to get consistency. There has been an improvement.
Amorim will want to forget about that game on Monday evening, but that’s easier said than done. It happened, and they were really poor, and they’ve now got the chance to get it out of the system against Crystal Palace. That’s how they get around it, getting the right result again, but I’m not sure they will.
Palace are flying, they’re fifth in the league and they’ve got some really good players. The only thing was their trip away in Europe on Thursday night, which may hinder them. But I’m going to go for a home win, because I think they’re an excellent side.
Prediction: Crystal Palace win.
West Ham vs Liverpool
I haven’t got a clue what to expect from Liverpool. Well, I should do, actually, because they’re going to concede goals, and the worrying thing is the manner of their defeats. It gives me no confidence to say that they could go to West Ham and win.
West Ham went 2-0 up at Bournemouth, threw the two-goal lead away, they got a point in the end, but they got battered in the second half at Bournemouth.
I’m not confident, but I’ll go for Liverpool away a win.
Prediction: Liverpool win.
Aston Villa vs Wolves
Wolves were looking for a new manager bounce, but I guess a touch of reality must have set in with Rob, in terms of at being and home and getting beat the way they did.
I’d be amazed if they go there and get something, but you never know in derby games. I guess if you are on a run like this and go and win a game, then it would be a derby game, because some strange things happening in those matches.
But I’m not sure I can see that happening at Villa Park, and I think Villa will have too much for them, even if they have been playing in Europe.
It won’t be long before Wolves fans are looking at Derby’s lowest points record, and what I’ve seen from Wolves is that there is a danger that record could go. I haven’t seen anything to suggest anything differently. Two points and seven goals in 12 games. I mean, you’d have to be pretty awful to break that record, but I’ve not seen anything yet in Wolves that tell me that they could get as many points as that.
Prediction: Aston Villa win.
Nottingham Forest vs Brighton
Brighton winning last weekend, albeit Brentford missed the penalty. Forest going to Liverpool and winning in the way they did. I think Forest will try and entice them onto them, especially with the way they’re playing, they will try to hit them on the break.
Brighton have done okay, but I just think with the job that Sean Dyche is doing, and the result last weekend, and the belief and the confidence they’ll get from that, so, I’m going to go for a home win.
You get the feeling that it should have been Dyche replacing Nuno, when instead it was Postecoglou because it’s his sort of team, it’s his sort of setup, it was ideal for him, and they’ve gone for that, and already the players are responding, so he’s doing a great job.
Prediction: Nottingham Forest win.
Chelsea vs Arsenal
This has all the ingredients of being a great game. I was hugely impressed with Chelsea against Barcelona, but I’ve been massively impressed with Arsenal all season, in every competition.
Chelsea have had an extra day’s rest and that might factor into it, but I just think because of how good Arsenal are, and how they can rotate and make one or two changes without it impacting them I’m going to say Arsenal will go there and win.
Prediction: Arsenal win.
