Alex Bregman Extension Talk Fuels Hope for Red Sox’s Future

2025 has been a disappointing season for many teams in the league attempting to go deeper in the postseason or get to the postseason. The Boston Red Sox are among the teams that came into the season with a lot of hope to get back to the postseason for the first time since the 2021 season.

Chances of Alex Bregman Being Extended Are Great

The combination of the veteran talent already on the team and the hope of the young prospects coming in and being immediate players was there. Finally, the addition of third baseman Alex Bregman and star pitcher Garrett Crochet would be a boost to a win-now-minded Boston Red Sox.

Instead, the Red Sox have been one of the most underwhelming teams this season on account of the lack of depth and reliable front-office trust. Boston has already shown signs of giving up on the season by trading designated hitter Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.

While seeing the growing productivity of the young players has been positive, the season’s hope for postseason accomplishments continues to be bleak. Bregman, while under a three-year contract, has the opportunity to opt out at the season, which would be even more of a gut punch. Luckily, Bregman has already shown his appreciation and leadership for the Red Sox as he could all in on an extension at the end of the season.

Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, spoke to the Boston Globe’s Tim Healey about the potential of being with the Red Sox for the long haul.

“I always tell the team — and Alex directs me to tell them — we’re always open to any conversation. Any player who plays well somewhere, it’s something that’s important for the team and important for the player. It’s an additive.”

Bregman Was Having an Elite Season Before His Injury

Bregman had been one of the most efficient hitters and defenders this season for the Boston Red Sox until he suffered a strained quad on May 24. In 51 games played, he has accounted for 32 runs, 59 hits, 11 home runs, 35 RBIs, 22 walks, a team-high batting average of .229, an on-base percentage of .385, and a slugging percentage of .533. He is having his most efficient season since 2019 for the Houston Astros.

Most of all, Bregman has been a leader for the Red Sox before even playing a regular-season game for the organization. He has been a key role model for the young players and the minor league players by traveling and playing with the team in multiple preseason games. This is a team that needs leadership now, with Devers gone and showing some hostility towards the front office. The front office, meanwhile, is preparing for the worst.

There were legitimate concerns that Bregman could’ve opted out of his contract and left Boston for greener pastures. He is expected to earn about $40 million next season if he opts in, $60 million in the 2027 season. Bregman could be looking for something on a team-friendly deal and a longer stay in Boston, especially if he loves Red Sox Nation and the city of Boston. Even if the Red Sox continue to battle for .500%, there is some good that came out of the season, such as Bregman’s All-Star potential, his leadership, and his potential to extend his deal earlier than expected.
