Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is never one to hold back his thoughts, and the Pro Bowl pass-catcher made that clear again this week.
On the latest episode of the St. Brown Podcast, he aimed some playful but pointed comments at Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson, setting the stage for what should be an emotional NFC North showdown in Week 2.
Amon-Ra St. Brown Sends a Warning to the Bears’ New Head Coach
St. Brown, who has been instrumental in Detroit’s rise to NFC contender status, made it clear he and his teammates won’t be rolling out the red carpet for Johnson’s return to Detroit.
“Week 2 going to be so crazy I promise you,” St. Brown said. “As soon as Ben [Johnson] walks in there, we’re booing him. I don’t give a f***. We all booing him.”
Johnson made the decision to leave his role as Detroit’s offensive coordinator this offseason to take over as head coach of the Bears.
And it seems someone is still salty about that.
But it’s valid, considering Johnson’s pivotal role in helping quarterback Jared Goff and the rest of the Lions’ offense become one of the most productive units in the NFL. For St. Brown, it seems the personal bond he developed with Johnson makes this matchup even more intense.
From Allies to Rivals: The Ben Johnson Factor
The playful back-and-forth didn’t stop there. Bears 2024 first-round wideout Rome Odunze, who joined the podcast, shared his thoughts on the matchup.
“He [Ben Johnson] said it’s going to be lit. I’m not gonna lie. And I’m here for it,” Odunze responded, embracing the energy surrounding the Lions-Bears rivalry.
St. Brown isn’t ready to accept Johnson as the Bears head coach, saying, “I just want to be a fly on the wall in his meeting room, bro, like how is he as a head coach? Like, ‘Ben, that is not you dawg.’ Like I know you, stop acting like this, Ben,” he said, poking fun at the idea of Johnson transitioning from offensive coordinator to the more serious role of a head coach.
Odunze had the final word, telling St. Brown, “Nah, bro, you’re done with Ben now. It’s our turn, bro.”
While the exchange was lighthearted, the undertones are serious. Johnson knows the Lions inside and out, and now, he’ll be tasked with turning that knowledge into an advantage for his team.
For St. Brown and the Lions, Week 2 will be more than just another game on the schedule. It’s about pride, loyalty, and sending a message to a coach they once adored. For the Bears, it’s an opportunity to prove Johnson’s hiring was the right move and to show that the NFC North may no longer run solely through Detroit.
With trash talk already flowing months before kickoff, the Week 2 clash between the Bears and the Lions is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated games of the season.
If St. Brown’s words are any indication, Johnson better be ready to feel the full weight of his old team’s emotions when he steps back into Ford Field.
