The Montreal Canadiens are expected to trade Carey Price’s contract come September 1 after most of his money is paid.
Although Price hasn’t played in years due to injuries, Montreal could look to trade his contract to save some money. However, it could also be part of a bigger deal, as NHL analyst Tab Bamford of BleacherNation shared a stunning Canadiens and Chicago Blackhawks trade.
Canadiens acquire:
- Laurent Brossoit
- Lukas Reichel
- Chicago’s 2026 second-round pick
- Toronto’s 2026 second-round pick
- Vancouver’s 2027 second-round pick
Blackhawks acquire:
- Carey Price’s contract ($10.5M cap hit)
- Montreal’s 2026 first-round pick
- Montreal’s 2027 first-round pick
The proposed deal would be a blockbuster and a tunning trade that would see Montreal deal two first-round picks, but would get three seconds back to make up for it. The Habs also get a quality backup goalie and a former first-round pick forward who could use a change of scenery.
Brossoit is entering the final year of his two-year, $6.6 million deal and would be Montreal’s backup goalie. He would add some insurance behind Sam Montembeault, but there are some question marks as he missed all of last season due to an injury.
A big part of the return would be Reichel, who can be a middle-six forward for the Canadiens. Reichel was selected in the first round in 2020 and is in the final year of his two-year, $2.4 million deal. He recorded 8 goals and 14 assists for 22 points in 70 games as he’d add some secondary scoring to the lineup.
The Blackhawks, meanwhile, would get two first-round picks while getting off Brossoit’s contract, but they would have to take on the final year of Price’s deal. However, that isn’t a concern for Chicago as they have plenty of cap space.
Analyst Explains Canadiens-Blackhawks Swap
The seven-asset move would be a stunning blockbuster deal that makes sense for both teams.
Chicago gets two first-round picks, while Montreal gets a young forward and some second-rounders to make up for the firsts. Bamford, meanwhile, believes it’s a win-win trade for both teams.
“The Blackhawks would add two more premium assets, giving them three picks in the first round in 2026 — enough ammo to do something significant. It would add a second pick in the first round in the 2027 NHL Draft to their pipeline as well,” Bamford wrote…
“The Canadiens would acquire a potential upgrade as a backup in net, a fast, young forward who may have a ceiling that’s still higher than we’ve seen, and enough draft capital that they could still be active trying to move up in each of the next two drafts. Importantly for Montreal: both Reichel and Broissoit have expiring contracts, giving them future flexibility as well,” Bamford added.
The deal would be a blockbuster, and adding Reichel and Brossoit would help raise the floor for Montreal.
Canadiens Likely to Trade Price’s Contract
All signs point to the Canadiens’ trading Price’s contract after September 1, when his signing bonus is paid out.
NHL insider Marco D’Amico of RG.org reported that the Canadiens will be looking to trade the future Hall of Famer’s contract.
“The Canadiens are taking a pulse on the NHL trade market and seeing where they fit in. All eyes are on that September 1 date when it comes to Carey Price,” said the source.
Once the Montreal trades Price’s contract, it can open the door for the Canadiens to make another impact move.
“Once Price’s contract is moved, and they actually have real cap space, there is potential for a subsequent move. Because the Canadiens don’t want to use off-season LTIR right now and they don’t want to sacrifice a roster player,” another NHL source explained.
The Canadiens are looking to build off last season’s success, where they made the playoffs.
