It was reported by The Athletic’s David Ornstein that Onana‘s agency switch was to help him land a bumper new contract, but could now seek to shift the star to another club.
Although it is noted that without a big money offer, Man Utd’s PSR problems mean they may not risk taking a loss on him two years after buying him for just over £47million.
The Cameroon international was brutally axed in the travelling squad to Newcastle by Ruben Amorim after a horror performance against Lyon in the Europa League last Thursday.
However, his replacement, Altay Bayindir, fared no better than Onana on his Premier League debut as he made a huge gaffe of his own during Man Utd’s 4-1 defeat.
Amorim said the reason for Onana’s axing was to help the 29-year-old clear his head after a string of errors and his wife, Melanie, being the victim of a violent street robbery in Alderley Edge recently.
Onana is said to have accepted the decision made by the manager.
On the call, Amorim said: “It is a normal thing. Sometimes, you have to push the player to play again, sometimes you have to let him disconnect a little bit.
“Tomorrow, he will be in training to prepare for the next one [Lyon] so I felt that it was a good time for Andre to disconnect.

“I think he was okay [about it] because I explained and then, you don’t need to like [it], but you understand because I explain every situation.
“It’s a normal situation. You have to manage everything, sometimes people just look at the physical aspect but the mental aspect is really, really important.
“It’s for just one game and we give Altay an opportunity, he deserves it also and then, again, tomorrow is a new life and we will prepare for the next one.”
Onana is in line to return to the team on Thursday for the second leg against Lyon at Old Trafford.
The former Inter Milan goalkeeper will have another chance to win his war of words with Nemanja Matic after the ex-Red Devils midfielder labelled Onana, “one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history”.
SunSport looked at five possible options who could replace Onana as Man Utd’s new No1 shot-stopper.
Those candidates include Brighton goalie Bart Verbruggen, Serie A star Zion Suzuki and Porto No1 Diogo Costa.
It is reported by Manchester Evening News that United would need to get at least £26.2m this summer to avoid a Financial Fair Play loss on Onana after amortisation.
However, his continued mistakes have seen his transfer market value decrease from £34.5m when he joined to £27.6m now, according to Transfermarkt.

Man Utd ratings vs Lyon as two Onana blunders earn under-fire keeper a ONE out of 10

MANCHESTER UNITED were left ruing calamity goalkeeper Andre Onana as two massive blunders saw them leave their Europa League quarter-final first leg with a 2-2 draw against Lyon.
The season-defining clash for both clubs became even spicier ahead of the game following a war words between Onana and ex-Red Devils star Nemanja Matic, with the Serbian dubbing the goalkeeper “one of the worst in United history”.
It certainly riled up the home side’s crowd, who made their voices known as Ruben Amorim named an unchanged team – for the first time since his arrival – from the Manchester derby.
But Onana was found wanting when he failed to save Thiago Almada’s inswinging free-kick to give the hosts the lead.
Leny Yoro nodded in an equaliser just before the interval after Manuel Ugarte‘s volley.
And Joshua Zirkzee looked to have won the game for the visitors with his late header converting a Fernandes cross.
But United’s joy was short-lived as Onana parried a shot straight to Rayan Cherki in added time, and the midfielder tapped in to leave the tie on a knife-edge.
