As if they weren’t already playing with the difficulty sliders on high, the Kansas City Chiefs failed to escape Week 14 without deteriorating even more. The reigning AFC champs saw a couple of players go down in prime time.
In their tough Sunday outing against the Houston Texans, Kansas City lost offensive tackle Wanya Morris and cornerback Trent McDuffie in the first quarter of action.
Following a 20-10 defeat, head coach Andy Reid provided an update on the Chiefs’ injury situation.
Andy Reid Confirms Injury to Wanya Morris vs. Texans
Reid kicked things off by confirming a leg issue for Morris.
“Wanya hurt his leg, lower leg,” Reid began. “We’ll just have to see with the next day or so here how he is.”
Unfortunately for Morris, his night was over as quickly as it began. On Kansas City’s very first offensive play, he went down with his injury. Running back Isiah Pacheco‘s 3-yard tote ended up as a minor gain for the team in the box score, but a noteworthy loss in the personnel department.
Morris’ knee appeared to bend awkwardly on the play, resulting in him crumbling down to the ground. He remained there for a while, eventually exiting to the sideline with some assistance. An on-site medical cart later took Morris and some Chiefs staffers to the locker room for further work.
Initially, Morris was deemed questionable to return with a knee injury. At 7:58 p.m. local time in Kansas City, the team downgraded him to out via their official X account.
The 25-year-old originally joined the organization in 2023 as a third-round NFL Draft selection. Entering Week 14, he had 65 offensive snaps this season and another 51 on special teams. According to Pro Football Focus, Morris posted composite offensive grades of 55.6 and 53.9 across 1,072 combined snaps in 2023 and 2024.
Morris was replaced by undrafted rookie free agent Esa Pole, who finished the game at left tackle. Morris was already filling in for first-round and first-year man Josh Simmons, who underwent wrist surgery and is on injured reserve. On the opposite side of the offensive line, Jaylon Moore got the start in place of Jawaan Taylor (triceps).
A battered and tattered Chiefs offensive line just can’t catch a break in the final stretch of the 2025-26 campaign.
Update on Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie’s Week 14 Injury
As mentioned, Morris wasn’t the only member of the Chiefs to go down on Sunday. In what was a brutal night for the franchise, one of its brightest stars sustained an ailment of his own. It’s a knee problem for McDuffie.
“Trent McDuffie hyperextended his knee, so we’ll have to see how it works out for him,” Reid said.
Like Morris, McDuffie’s injury occurred in the first quarter. On the opening play of the Texans’ second possession, the veteran cornerback lost to wide receiver Nico Collins deep down the field. In the sequence of falling to the ground, McDuffie hurt his knee.
He exited the contest and was originally ruled questionable to return after preliminary examinations and an attempted warmup. At 9:19 p.m. in Kansas City, he was downgraded to out.
The Chiefs were already without defensive back Chris Roland-Wallace, who went on IR over the weekend. Offseason signing Kristian Fulton was made a healthy scratch prior to Sunday’s kickoff. That placed a ton of pressure on McDuffie to perform, thus doing the same for those who stuck around in the game after his injury.
McDuffie, a first-round pick back in 2022, started every game this season. In Weeks 1-13, he racked up 62 tackles (2 for loss) with 7 pass breakups and an interception. He provided inside-outside versatility regarding alignment, a major plus for defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Per PFF, his 76.1 coverage grade is eighth out of 110 qualified cornerbacks.
All eyes in Kansas City now shift to Week 15’s Sunday game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
