Andy Reid Reveals Polarizing Plan for Patrick Mahomes vs. Seahawks

The Kansas City Chiefs‘ 2025-26 training camp is officially in the books, but the reigning AFC champions still have some opportunities to improve.

One of those avenues presents itself on Friday night. An August 15 outing against the Seattle Seahawks is the second Chiefs preseason game of the summer. This week’s game will give head coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach a better outlook on their roster.

With that said, the best player on either side may not be in the lineup.

Andy Reid Not Optimistic About Patrick Mahomes’ Chances to Play vs. Seahawks

Speaking to the media on Wednesday following practice, Reid wasn’t high on quarterback Patrick Mahomes‘ chances of playing on Friday.

“We’ll see,” Reid said. “There’s a good chance he doesn’t, but we’ll see how it goes.”

Reid admitted “there’s a chance” playing time for someone like Mahomes changes. On the other hand, he seems focused on seeing what his backups can do. He wants to “give Brett enough to evaluate” the roster before cutdowns.

“I’m still kind of figuring out who’s going to play [or] not play, that whole deal,” Reid said. “There’s a chance I sit a couple of the starters, or at least be short with them. We want to make sure we get a good look at these guys, these young guys, so we’ll just see how it all rolls going forward.”

When asked about Reid’s looming decision, Mahomes defaulted to his future Hall of Fame head coach.

“I always want to play,” Mahomes said. “I always want to be out there and play. You can say you don’t want to play, and then you get to the game and it’s like, ‘Man, I want to be in the game and play in a game with my teammates.’ At the end of the day, I trust in coach Reid and his process. He has a reason for everything that he does.”

The two-time NFL MVP threw just one pass in the Chiefs’ opener against the Arizona Cardinals. Is that enough, assuming he doesn’t work next week versus the Chicago Bears? Maybe, but either way, Mahomes is going to be prepared.

“Yeah, I mean, I’ll be prepared to play,” Mahomes said. “I go into every single game with the mentality of, you don’t know how how much you’re going to get in there so whenever you do get reps, you just try to maximize those. I’ll go through my normal routine and be ready to go. We’ll see how it gets as we get there, but I’ll be prepared to play for however many snaps that is.”

Reid also provided an injury update on players like tight end Jake Briningstool, wideout Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and others.

“Briningstool, he’ll be out,” Reid said. “Marquise will be out. [Ethan] Driskell will be out. Kareem Hunt got a quad contusion — I’m just going to see about him.”

On Monday, Reid explained a bit more about the nature of Brown’s specific ailment.

“It’s not really a high-ankle sprain,” Reid said. “It’s more ankle-foot area. He’s making great progress, though. He’s running now a little bit, so that’s a positive. I don’t think he’s too far off, but we’ll see. He’s doing good.”

Briningstool, an undrafted rookie free agent, has been held out of several practices with a hamstring injury. Brown, who missed plenty of last season with a sternoclavicular injury, is banged up again this preseason. Driskell, a lengthy and athletic offensive tackle prospect, underwent an appendectomy. Hunt is the injury to monitor, as he’s widely regarded as the Chiefs’ second halfback on the depth chart. He helped fuel a great rushing success rate for the team in 2024-25.

As the Chiefs shift their focus to Seattle, they’ll also look to get healthy for Week 1 of the regular season.
