Former Manchester United star Angel Gomes has turned down approaches from Tottenham and West Ham to agree a deal with Marseille.

The England international, capped four times last year under interim boss Lee Carsley, is set to leave Lille on a free transfer having reached the end of his contract with the club he joined after being released by United five years ago.

Tottenham and West Ham United were both keen to sign the Londoner on a free transfer.

But despite Ange Postecoglou’s side having Champions League football on offer next season, Gomes has opted to remain in France.

RMC Sport report the 25-year-old has reached an agreement in principle to sign for Marseille.

Roberto de Zerbi’s side started negotiations some months ago with Gomes now set to be reunited with another former United academy star in Mason Greenwood.

Gomes was backed for a starring role at United, emerging from the academy to make his first-team debut at 16.

He replaced Wayne Rooney on the final day of the season against Crystal Palace in 2017, becoming the club’s youngest debutant since the legendary Duncan Edwards.

Gomes would leave United in the summer of 2020 however with just a handful of further appearances, turning down the club’s offer of a new contract to pursue greater first-team football opportunities.

United were tentatively linked with a move to bring him back to Old Trafford last year with the player admitting it will always be a dream to return home.

‘Do I imagine myself coming back one day? Obviously, it’s home,’ Gomes told L’Equipe in November 2022.

‘I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground, and keep playing, making the most of it. I can’t predict what will happen in the future.’
