No day is pleasant for an NFL head coach in charge of a 3-7 team.
That is the exact situation Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon finds himself in, and it has some wondering about his future job status.
It makes sense that Jonathan Gannon is facing some pressure. Arizona has yet to finish with a winning record in his three years in the desert. Sometimes NFL head coaches can survive for another season, but oftentimes, they don’t.
While some NFL insiders have indicated that Gannon is likely to return to the Cardinals, there is a lot of season left for Arizona to fall even further in the standings.
Speculation will continue about Gannon’s future with the Cardinals, and he is already getting questions about it.
Jonathan Gannon Plans to “Control the Controllables” Amid Coaching Rumors
Jonathan Gannon does not seem overly stressed about his job status. When asked about possibly being on the hot seat on Nov. 17, Gannon said those things are out of his control.
Here’s how he responded when Arizona Sports reporter Tyler Drake asked him about that topic:
That does not look like a man who is losing sleep over hot seat rumors. Could it be that Jonathan Gannon is taking a Zen approach to this situation?
Absolutely on the table. After all, he does not have control over his employment, as he mentioned during the press conference.
“I’m going to control the controllables for myself,” Gannon said. “I come to work and do the best job that I can and try to get our team in position and win a game.”
Now, it is pretty important for Gannon and the Cardinals to check off the ‘winning a game’ box soon.
Otherwise, his hot seat rumors will grow like a wildfire on a dry summer day outside of Prescott.
How Have the Arizona Cardinals Performed Under Gannon?
It feels like the Arizona Cardinals’ 2-0 start to the season was a decade ago. Arizona has since faceplanted to a 3-7 record and is embroiled in quarterback drama.
Former top overall draft pick and longtime starting quarterback Kyler Murray played the first five games of the season before being sidelined with a foot strain. He was later benched for Jacoby Brissett, which opened the door for speculation to grow about Murray’s future in Arizona.
At this point, it seems like Murray will be suiting up for another NFL team in 2026. Murray’s absence could help Gannon start fresh with a new quarterback, potentially even Brissett, who has played solid football for the Cardinals this season.
Regardless of the starting quarterback for Arizona in 2026, Gannon will need to lead the team to a good season to have any security of continuing as the Cardinals’ head coach beyond next year.
Gannon led Arizona to respectability in 2024, but it looks like this season will be a real step back.
Here’s how Gannon’s Cardinals have fared in his three seasons leading the team:
2023: 4-13, 4th in NFC West
2024: 8-9, 3rd in NFC West
2025: 3-7
It appears another fourth-place finish in the NFC West is inevitable for Arizona, so at this point, it’s just about stacking victories. With two games left against the Los Angeles Rams, and games remaining against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Cardinals do not have a smooth finish to the season.
