Trent Alexander-Arnold has returned to training and could be fit enough to feature when Liverpool travel to Leicester City, according to Arne Slot.

Liverpool head to the King Power on Sunday, knowing that victory will be enough to seal the Premier League title – providing Arsenal also lose at Ipswich Town.

The Reds have been destined to lift the trophy for some time now, though their form has stumbled of late, with three defeats in their last five games across all competitions.

Vice-captain Alexander-Arnold has missed the last four matches with an ankle injury and with Conor Bradley also struggling with fitness issues, right-back has become somewhat of a problematic position for Slot.

But in his pre-match press conference on Friday, the Dutch head coach confirmed that England star Alexander-Arnold was back in training but it is too soon to put him in the starting XI.

‘Trent is not ready to start but if things go well today and tomorrow, he might – might – be on the bench,’ Slot said.

‘First session with the team was Weds, so not able to start but let’s see if he can join us, would be nice if he is with us.’

In other injury news, Joe Gomez remains sidelined with a thigh injury but Darwin Nunez should be back after missing last weekend’s win over West Ham through illness.

Liverpool fans were in a joyous mood on Thursday when the club announced that captain Virgil van Dijk had joined Mohamed Salah in signing a contract extension.

However, it would seem they are resigned to losing Alexander-Arnold in the summer, with reports stating that he is close to sealing a free transfer to Real Madrid.

Asked if there were any update on this matter, Slot responded: ‘No, I think you would be surprised if I answered differently to the rest of the season.

‘It is for hours the same answer: we don’t talk about these things when they are not done and they are not.

‘Trent is coming back from injury and trained with us this week, he has shown his commitment and he shows me what a player he is when he is on a pitch and how much he works hard to be back with the team and the fans of Liverpool.

‘Everyone who watches football knows he is an incredible full-back for this club, so let’s see what the future brings.’
