Saturday’s US Open final will pit world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka against American standout Amanda Anisimova, who is up to No. 4 in the world on the WTA live rankings.
For Sabalenka, Saturday’s match will be her third Grand Slam final of the year. After coming up short in the final of both the Australian Open and Roland Garros, the fan-favorite will be looking to close out the year with a bang.
So far, Sabalenka has demonstrated the kind of consistency typically seen in a champion. After rattling off four wins without dropping a set through the first four rounds, Sabalenka then showcased her composure against Jessica Pegula in the semifinals.
After beating Pegula in the 2024 US Open final, Sabalenka rallied from a set down to defeat the American star 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday, punching her ticket to her third straight US Open final.
Now, she faces off with Amanda Anisimova, whose run in Flushing Meadows has been nothing short of remarkable.
After being double-bageled by Iga Swiatek in the Wimbledon final this summer, Anisimova was able to avenge the loss to Swiatek in the quarterfinals, before eliminating four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in a thrilling three-setter on Thursday.
Now, Anisimova looks to follow in Coco Gauff’s footsteps and become the next American to win the US Open.
Sabalenka vs. Anisimova H2H
Heading into Saturday’s US Open final, Amanda Anisimova leads the head-to-head against Aryna Sabalenka 6-3.
Most recently, when the two faced off in the semifinals of Wimbledon, Anisimova was able to pick up a big three-set win, bouncing back from a straight-set loss to Sabalenka at the French Open just weeks prior.
While defeating the world No. 1 may seem like a tall order, Anisimova’s resilience this season can’t be understated.
With her win over Osaka, Anisimova became the first woman to lose a final 0-6, 0-6, and then make the final of the next Grand Slam.
As she explained to members of the press in response to a question about what her ability to bounce back says, Amanda Anisimova explained:
“I think it just shows that I’ve worked really hard, especially on my mental game and not giving up. Today I could have easily said, ‘Oh she’s playing better than me and I can’t really do anything.’
“And [instead] I really tried to find a way, any way I could, to stay in the match even though it was extremely tough and she was playing really great tennis. I think I’ve really worked on myself to really be able to handle those moments and to believe in myself.”
