Astros Cut Ties With Favorite Slugger Ahead of Trade Deadline, Wife Announces

Jon Singleton’s on-again, off-again dance with the Houston Astros has reached another conclusion.

The 33-year-old former top prospect was designated for assignment on Monday, ending his third different stint with the Astros. His wife, Linzy Singleton, broke the news on social media site X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Let me break the news. Jon was just DFA’d.”

Singleton played just three games for Houston this season, recording one hit in nine at-bats.

This comes after a solid 2024 in which Singleton slashed .234/.321.386 with 13 home runs and 42 RBI in 119 games. As indicated by his 102 OPS+, he was slightly better than league average.

Jon Singleton Has Been a Popular Astro

Singleton began the season in the New York Mets’ minor league system but was released on June 16. He signed with Houston on June 24 and joined Triple-A Sugar Land, where he hit .254 with four homers and 12 RBI in 82 at-bats (18 games).

Houston then added Singleton to its active roster on July 20 alongside Shay Whitcomb in wake of an injury to All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes, who landed on the injured list with a hamstring strain.

Acquired in 2014 from the Philadelphia Phillies in a trade for Hunter Pence, Singleton signed a five-year, $10 million contract before he even appeared in a Major League game. He debuted later that season and hit 14 homers and drove in a career-high 44 runs in 95 games while batting .168. He also appeared in 144 games as an Astro between 2023 and 2024.

Singleton was in the mix to make the roster out of spring training, but the Astros opted against adding him after signing Christian Walker to a three-year, $60 million deal. With Yordan Alvarez slated to log most of his time at designated hitter, there simply wasn’t room for Singleton in Houston.

What’s Next for Jon Singleton?

The Astros will have 10 days from the time Singleton was designated for assignment to trade, waive or release him. That timeframe, of course, will coincide with Thursday’s trade deadline.

While Singleton hasn’t come close to matching the hype that followed him to the big leagues, when he was ranked the No. 1 prospect in the Astros’ system in 2013, ahead of future All-Stars Carlos Correa and George Springer, his power may appeal to teams off the bench.

Regardless of where Singleton eventually lands, his wife clearly feels slighted by how Houston went about its business. Said Linzy on X: “I’m tired of men who can’t even look me in the eye when they walk by me being the ones to break the news. So had to get one in myself.”
