Isaac Paredesâ season may not be done after all.
The Houston Astros provided another update Monday on their All-Star third baseman, revealing that Paredes has opted to forgo surgery on his injured hamstring in hopes of returning later this season.
âHis whole opinion on this is, he wants to work hard to try to get back this season,â Astros general manager Dana Brown said via the Associated Press. âOf course, heâs going to dedicate himself to getting back.â
When Did Isaac Paredes Get Injured?
Paredes, 26, injured his hamstring running to first base in a game on July 19. The initial injury diagnosis was bleak, with manager Joe Espada saying, âitâs definitely something thatâs going to keep him out for a while.â
Following multiple rounds of imaging, Paredes was given the option of trying to rehab his severely strained hamstring or undergo surgery. Had Paredes chosen to have surgery, he would have faced a six-month recovery process, per Brown.
âI think him wanting to rehab is him letting us know that he wants to be a part of whatâs going on here right now with this team,â Brown said via the Houston Chronicle.
Paredes, acquired in an offseason deal that sent outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs, was having a strong season at the time of his injury. Paredes has a .259/.359/.470 slash line with 19 home runs and 50 RBI. Paredes was selected to the All-Star team as an injury replacement but skipped the festivities to attend a family matter. It was his second straight All-Star nomination.
How is the Astros’ Lineup Performing?
Despite sputtering of late, with seven losses in their last 10 games, the Astros (63-50) maintained a 3.0-game lead atop the American League West heading into Tuesdayâs game against the Miami Marlins.
In addition to Paredes, the Astros are also currently without All-Star designated hitter Yordan Alvarez (hand) and starting pitchers Cristian Javier (elbow) and Lance McCullers Jr. (finger).
Alvarez, 27, has been on the injured list since May 5 with a small fracture in his right hand. Prior to his injury, which was initially misdiagnosed as inflammation, the three-time All-Star was slashing .210/.306/.340 with just three homers and 18 RBI.
Brown offered an encouraging update on Alvarez during a recent appearance on The Sean Salisbury Show, suggesting he could return by the middle of August barring any setbacks.
Alvarezâs absence has been noticeable. The Astros rank second in the majors in batting average (.257) but just 14th in homers (123) and 18th in runs scored (486).
