Astros Make Massive Move to Acquire Former World Series Hero

The Houston Astros have been one of the most surprising teams in baseball this season. After losing franchise icons in the offseason and Yordan Alvarez being injured for the majority of the season, Houston has weathered the storm and holds the first-place lead in the American League West. Houston has also had to deal with in-season injuries like Jeremy Peña and Isaac Paredes. Paredes is reportedly set to miss multiple months and likely won’t return this season.

All these factors led to the Astros believing they had to make moves this trade deadline, and they certainly did so just a few hours before the 6 p.m. deadline with a huge splash.

The Minnesota Twins are emptying the house and have shipped off all their best players.

Houston Makes Huge Splash for Carlos Correa

Per Jeff Passan, the Minnesota Twins are sending infielder Carlos Correa to the Houston Astros in a reunion deal. Correa had said if there were any team he wanted to get traded to, it was the Astros, and Minnesota’s front office gave Correa his wish in a huge blockbuster deal.

The Astros have secured a spot as one of the favorites in the American League once again. Correa is hitting .263 with seven home runs in 93 games. A little bit of a down season for Correa, but the Twins have struggled, especially over the last month. The question now is where Correa will play? The idea is that he will play third base, which hasn’t happened much in his career.

Correa was a World Series hero for the Astros back in 2017, where he had many notable playoff moments. In 2021, Correa led MLB in WAR (7.3) and then departed from Houston and signed a six-year, $200 million deal with Minnesota, and they are expected to eat some money on that contract.

Correa’s Value and Injury History

In the 2017 season with the Houston Astros, en route to a World Series ring, Correa hit .288 with five home runs and 14 RBIs in the playoffs. Correa is a former No. 1 overall draft pick back in 2012, and has battled injuries throughout his career, but is still a great defender, and can drive the ball to all parts of the field.

Tim Dierkes of MLBtraderumors.com was quick to the news after the report of Correa’s trade:

“Correa played in only 86 games for the Twins in 2024, missing time due to an intercostal strain and plantar fasciitis.  He spent time on the seven-day concussion list in May this year, but has otherwise avoided the IL despite some minor injuries.”

“The Astros and Crane have a history of letting star players depart for longer free agent deals elsewhere.  In this case, Correa departed after the 2021 season.  Nearly three years later third baseman Alex Bregman turned down the Astros’ overtures and landed in Boston, after the club had already landed his replacement in Isaac Paredes (acquired from the Cubs in part because the Astros knew they couldn’t win the bidding on Kyle Tucker).  Paredes tore his hamstring on July 19th, which may be season-ending.”
