The Atlanta Falcons got absolutely embarrassed on Sunday by the Miami Dolphins 34-10. It was awful and not having Michael Penix at quarterback isn’t much of an excuse when Kirk Cousins is your backup.
Cousins was 21-for-31 passing for 173 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. It’s pretty much the stat line you’d expect from a quarterback that just lost a football game 34-10.
But, the offense as a whole was pretty poor and that prompted questions about offensive coordinator Zac Robinson and whether or not head coach Rahemm Morris would consider making some changes.
“I’ve got so much confidence in Zac,” Morris said on Monday. “I don’t know what they are ranked the National Football League, as far as points, I mean, moving the ball and all that type of stuff. I know we can move the football. I know we got the ability to do those things. We’ve been ranked as high as five, as low as whatever, but these guys can move the football.”
Zac Robinson couldn’t get anything going for the Falcons offense
It wasn’t just the Falcons’ passing game that struggled. Sure, it doesn’t help that they played without wide receiver Drake London, but things shouldn’t have gone south so quickly.
The Falcons managed just 11 first downs the entire game. That’s pathetic and their lowest since a game in 2008 in Matt Ryan’s rookie year. Yes, we’re going back to a time when the local fanbase was still stung by their superstar quarterback doing time in Leavenworth.
They also didn’t even execute a third-down conversion until the fourth quarter, finishing just 2-for-11. They also failed on two of their four fourth-down conversions. This would have been their worst loss of the season if they hadn’t already gotten the snot beaten out of them 30-0 by the Carolina Panthers.
Still, Morris is confident in Robinson.
“They’ve got a great plan,” Morris continued. “They do a really good job. And we got a lot of confidence that we’ll get it going. And we got to get going this week. Every time you ride, the up and down roller coaster, [where you] have a good game, have a bad game, have a good game, have a bad game. Those questions are always going to be there. Those are always fair in the business that we’re in.”
Zac Robinson needed more from Bijan Robinson
Running back Bijan Robinson has been on a tear this season. He’s still in the early MVP discussion, but not because of anything he did against the Dolphins.
Robinson carried nine times for 25 yards for no touchdowns. If you have him on your fantasy team, you already know this. It’s not every game (or any game really) that Bijan averages 2.8 yards per carry and fumbles.
Guard Chris Lindstrom, who was many of several offensive linemen who didn’t block enough for Bijan, says that the lackluster offense isn’t on the coaches.
“It’s not a staff problem,” Chris Lindstrom said after the game. “They’re amazing. [From a] preparation standpoint, we’re fully prepared every single week. [We have] confidence in the plan, belief in the plan, we just need to go out and execute.”
