Atlanta Radio Host Blasts Former Agent on Falcons’ Cousins’ Situation

What else can be said about the situation between the Atlanta Falcons and quarterback Kirk Cousins that hasn’t also been said about the Cincinnati Bengals‘ issues with [insert just about any player here]?

The quick synopsis: The Falcons signed Cousins to a four-year, $180 million deal in 2024 that includes a full no-trade clause. Then, they went ahead and spent the eighth-overall pick on Michael Penix, Jr. in the NFL Draft a month or so later.

With Penix the starter entering the 2025 season, Cousins is now the most overpaid backup quarterback in the NFL this side of the Cleveland Browns‘ Deshaun Watson. And in the new Netflix series “Quarterback,” Cousins said that he felt “misled” when he signed with the Falcons.

This didn’t sit well with CBS Sports’ Joel Corry, a former sports agent.

“The point is the Falcons weren’t candid about the QB situation when Kirk Cousins was making his decision in free agency,” Corry posted on X. “If I represented Cousins, I would [be] pissed about key info being withheld. The 1st chance I had, I would be looking to f*** the Falcons.”

Local Atlanta radio host takes umbrage with Corry

Chris Dimino of 680 the Fan in Atlanta bristled at Corry’s comments, most likely because it’s an extremely slow news time and stirring up debates for talk radio show fodder is imperative.

On a recent episode of “Cellini & Dimino,” the host confronted Corry about his post on X (tweet…can we just say ‘tweet’ again?).

“I’m just asking, how as an agent would you ‘blank’ the Falcons?” Dimino asked.

“I’m going to tell you what I know,” Dimino continued. “I know agents. And you seem to have a problem that Kirk Cousins was misled. There’s never been an agent — not one, not one — that hasn’t tried to use everything to his benefit. And if the problem is with misleading and not telling him everything, that’s hilarious coming from an agent. It’s hilarious.”

Corry replied, “You’re entitled to your opinion on that.”

“I feel they weren’t upfront with the situation,” Corry continued. “You’re making a decision based on information that’s given to you. It could have worked out the same way if they told him, you know, we might take a quarterback early.”

As for agents holding grudges, Corry mentioned that it can absolutely happen when you’re dealing with multiple clients.

“I do remember a situation where I thought a team did something that was beyond the pale,” he continued. “I had a team that asked a guy to take a pay cut twice in the same offseason.”

Corry said it was a ridiculous request and went on to say that it changed his attitude with that team later when he was representing a different client.

Veteran NFL reporter agrees with Corry

While Dimino pushed back on the idea that agents could look to screw the Falcons when representing other players, veteran NFL writer Charles Robinson thinks that the Falcons absolutely lied to Cousins and also created a potential in-house problem.

“Cousins said he felt “misled” when the draft-day stunner unfolded,” Robinson writes. “That’s a diplomatic phrase. Everything I have heard from talking to those close to Cousins is that the more accurate descriptor — and more acidic — is that he was lied to.

“You can suggest this is what the Falcons created when they drafted Penix. They signed a veteran to a massive deal and gave him an in-house problem to worry about that would ultimately impact his thinking.”

Did they intentionally lie? Did they do something less nefarious like maybe withhold some information? Or, did they genuinely have no idea they were going to take a quarterback that high until Penix fell to them at No. 8?

The first two suggest deceit and that’s not a good way to do business. The last part suggests gross incompetence, which many experts think is also not a good way to do business.
