Former Minnesota Timberwolves guard Patrick Beverley, a catalyst in the franchiseâs return to the playoffs in 2022, is challenging disturbing allegations tied to his arrest in Texas on a third-degree felony charge.
Beverley, 37, was arrested in Fort Bend County, Texas, earlier this month and charged with family assault by impeding breath or circulation, a serious offense in Texas often associated with domestic violence strangulation cases. The charge carries the possibility of up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
The allegation stems from a late-night incident involving his younger sister. A police affidavit obtained by TMZ Sports claims Beverley grabbed her by the neck, lifted her off the ground, slammed her against the walls and punched her once in the eye. Police noted visible neck marks and petechiae in the eyes, a symptom commonly linked to oxygen restriction.
Beverley posted a $40,000 bond shortly after being booked and was released. No trial date has been scheduled.
Beverley’s Lawyer Challenges Allegations
Beverleyâs attorney, Letitia Quinones-Hollins, released a statement disputing the affidavitâs contents, calling it âinaccurateâ and âemotionally charged.â
The statement, provided to Heavy Sports, reads in part:
âI understand that the affidavit contains some negative details; however, remember that it is only one side of the story â given at a time when emotions were high. We donât believe that the description in that affidavit is accurate, nor is it complete.â
Quinones-Hollins emphasized that Beverley was not violent and cooperated fully.
âPatrick is not a violent man and was not violent that night. In fact, he was very respectful with the authorities and encouraged others to do the same.â
The attorney also described Beverley as his familyâs longtime provider and protector.
âHe is the provider and protector of his family, including his little sister and his mom⦠When all the facts are in, Patrick will be cleared of these charges.â
Spark Plug in Minnesota
Beverleyâs arrest has drawn attention in Minneapolis because of his key role in transforming the Timberwolves from a struggling franchise into a surprise playoff team following the 2021â22 season.
During his lone year with Minnesota, Beverley averaged 9.2 points, 4.6 assists and 4.1 rebounds. He also rallied fans with signature intensity, famously jumping on the scorerâs table at Target Center after the Wolves clinched a spot in the postseason during the 2022 NBA Play-In Tournament. The clip became iconic among Timberwolves fans as a symbol of renewed competitiveness in Minnesota basketball.
Before his arrest, Beverley drew headlines nationally when Dallas Mavericks star Klay Thompson criticized him for lewd comments made on a podcast regarding Thompsonâs partner, rapper Megan Thee Stallion. The comments fueled backlash across the NBA.
Legal Case Still Developing
Beverley has not played in the NBA since May 2024. He is currently a free agent after a short stint with the Milwaukee Bucks. His attorney urged the public, including Minnesota fans who still celebrate his playoff run, to avoid rushing to judgment.
âPlease remember this is America, and in our society, Patrick is innocent unless proven otherwise in a court of law.â
The case remains active in Texas as prosecutors continue reviewing the affidavit.
