Bears Analyst Provides Update on Tyson Bagent Trade Rumors

As the NFL trade deadline approaches, speculation always ramps up about potential moves teams might make to improve their roster or build for the future. For the Chicago Bears, one of the latest talking points has centered around backup quarterback Tyson Bagent, and whether the team might consider dealing him away.

However, according to Chicago Tribune writer and Bears analyst, Brad Biggs, those trade rumors don’t hold much weight. In his weekly mailbag, Biggs decisively shuts down the idea that Bagent could be on the move anytime soon, pointing to the Bears’ long-standing quarterback struggles and the organization’s commitment to Bagent as reasons why a trade would make little sense.

Bears See Bagent as More Valuable Than a Modest Draft Pick

In his response to a fan question about the possibility of a Bagent trade, Biggs expressed surprise that such speculation even exists, especially considering the Bears’ history of failed quarterback development.

For decades, Chicago has cycled through countless passers without finding sustained success at the position. Now, with Caleb Williams leading the offense and Bagent developing steadily behind him, Biggs questioned why the Bears would even entertain the idea of trading away one of their homegrown quarterbacks who appears to be getting better each and every year.

“If the Bears have a young player in Bagent who is improving to a point where other teams would have interest in him, why on earth would the organization look to flip him for what probably would be a modest draft pick in return?”

It’s a fair question. Backup quarterbacks often bring minimal return in trades, typically late-round picks or conditional selections, and given how important depth at the position is, the cost-benefit just doesn’t add up.

Biggs noted that only six quarterbacks started all 17 regular-season games last year, underscoring the league-wide need for reliable backups. While Williams has shown durability, the Bears wouldn’t want to risk being forced to start 37-year-old Case Keenum if an injury occurred.

Bagent, who looked comfortable in Ben Johnson’s offense during training camp and the preseason, provides far more value to the Bears as a dependable second option than he would as trade bait.

A Commitment That Signals Long-Term Confidence

Another major reason Biggs dismissed the trade rumors is Bagent’s recent contract extension. The Bears signed the 25-year-old quarterback to a two-year, $10 million extension in August, keeping him under contract through the 2027 season. With incentives, the deal could be worth up to $16 million, which is a strong indication that the organization sees him as part of its future plans.

Biggs emphasized that the early-season extension wasn’t made to create a trade asset but to maintain stability in the quarterback room.

“They went to him early with a new contract because they want to keep him around, not to consider what he might be worth in trade,” Biggs wrote.

Despite entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Division II Shepherd University, Bagent quickly earned respect for his poise and football IQ. His performance stepping in for Justin Fields during stretches of the past two seasons proved he could manage an NFL offense and keep the Bears competitive.

While Biggs didn’t completely rule out the possibility of a trade, he made it clear that it’s unlikely anytime soon.
