Bears’ Ben Johnson Again Frustrated Over Chicago’s Offense in Training Camp

Reports and videos have indicated that the Chicago Bears haven’t had the training camp they’ve been looking for. This likely falls on second-year quarterback Caleb Williams, who has tons of pressure to figure things out at the highest level.

After impressing at USC and being one of the top quarterback prospects the NFL has ever seen, the expectation was for the Bears to be an excellent team with him under center. It’s impossible to give up on him yet, as he’s still very young, but the signs haven’t been promising.

While that’s concerning, some promising things are coming out of Chicago, including the new head coach, Ben Johnson, who is keeping everybody accountable.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Johnson said that things were sloppy again over the weekend, and he had to ensure that the team understands that if they want to win at the highest level.

“It was sloppy — sloppier than we were hoping we would be at this point,” he said.

“It’s something we’re going to have to address for sure,” Johnson said. “If it continues like that, we’re not going to win many games.”

Is the Bears’ Offense under Ben Johnson Ready for Week 1?

Regarding what was sloppy for the Chicago Bears, the Chicago Sun-Times reported multiple delay-of-game penalties, which has reportedly been an issue throughout the early stages of training camp.

They also point out how Williams came close to an interception, with a wide receiver stepping in to keep the play alive—showing more trouble for Chicago.

“Quarterback Caleb Williams was off from the start and had two delay-of-game penalties on one drive early and a near-interception that was saved only by wide receiver Tyler Scott knocking it away from the defender. There was another delay-of-game later in practice and on a first-and-goal play toward the end of the two-hour session, Williams broke the huddle with seven seconds on the play clock and had to burn a timeout,” Jason Lieser wrote.

Caleb Williams can weather the adversity

For Williams, he can’t let the pressure get to him. There’s a reason why he was the first pick and highly regarded.

He didn’t have the best rookie season, but even then, he still threw for 3,541 yards and just six interceptions. He wasn’t elite by any means, but he was better than what the Chicago Bears have had in the past few years.

“Pressure’s not a thing for me,” Williams said on ESPN 1000’s “Waddle & Silvy” show. “I don’t think of it that way.

“It’s not my job to care what the outside noise is and things like that. My job is take care of everything in here and go out there and play. I know we didn’t win as many games as we wanted to last year, but I didn’t go 20 [touchdowns] and 20 interceptions and things like that. So, you know, take it for what you want, but no pressure is prevalent; pressure is a privilege, but you know the situation that I’m at. I don’t think I have pressure.”

Pressure isn’t easy to avoid while playing for a team like the Bears, especially with a passionate fan base. Still, Williams has to figure things out if he wants to be the player everybody expects and hopes him to be.
