It was an exciting win for the Chicago Bears on September 28 against the Las Vegas Raiders. With a chance to lose the game late in the fourth quarter, the Bears blocked a field goal, holding on for a 25-24 win. Not only are the Raiders a decent team, but winning in Las Vegas is no easy task.
There are a few ways to look at the Bears’ season. For one, there have to be improvements for Caleb Williams. In addition, the organization has to start winning games. They’ve begun to do so with Ben Johnson and Williams looking better. Williams was fine on Sunday, throwing for 212 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He led a game-winning drive, an impressive sign of what’s to come. According to Johnson, he had all the confidence in Williams to do just that, sending a short but sweet message.
“This is what you’re built for,” Johnson said, per Marquee Sports Network.
Ben Johnson Is Pushing Bears QB Caleb Williams
Johnson and the Chicago Bears understand that Williams has to be the guy for the team moving forward. The Bears lucked into drafting Williams, with the hope of him being a franchise quarterback. To say the first week and four years of Williams’ NFL career have been all sunshine and rainbows would be unfair.
The Bears’ head coach understands that, stating that he’ll be hard on all of his players, but he’s doing it out of love and trying to get them better. In moments like Week 4, Williams showed that tough love Johnson gives him by going out and making plays when it matters most.
“Thatâs coaching in general. Weâre not called to be here to be friends or cheerleaders. Weâre here to push, to challenge, to support,” Johnson said before the game, per Dan Wiederer of The Athletic.” There are a number of things the best coaches in my life have really imprinted on me. And whether I was a player or a fellow coach, I really think thatâs important.
“Itâs not what the player wants to hear all the time. Sometimes itâs what he needs to hear for us as a team to succeed and for him as an individual to get a little bit better. And you canât shy away from that. At this level, the best coaches Iâve been around, I think itâs an art. Theyâre the demanding ones where thereâs a way or thereâs a vision for how a play needs to go or a vision for how a fundamental needs to be executed. And you really â you donât waver from that belief. And you make sure weâre getting it right.
Bears Now Look Ahead
The Chicago Bears’ offense will be the focus moving forward. On paper, the offense has a chance to be special, especially with Johnson being as talented a playcaller as he is.
Johnson has been known for his unique play calling, which includes the stumblebum play. The stumblebum play is when the quarterback and running back pretend to fumble the football while stumbling. The Bears attempted it with Williams, and while it didn’t go as planned, it showed the confidence he has in his offense to go out and get creative.
âWe have a group of guys who come up with plays, and we felt like that could take advantage of something we saw,â Johnson said, per Michael David Smith of PFT. âWe were really in two-down territory in my mind at that point anyway, I so I knew we were going to go for an explosive play on that one, and if we didnât get it we were going to go for it on the next one. It happens sometimes. Thatâs the cost of doing business. Some of them hit, some of them donât.â
