All of a sudden, things are starting to look up for the Chicago Bears. After an impressive performance against the Dallas Cowboys, the Bears have a chance to walk into the bye week at 2-2 if they beat the Las Vegas Raiders. After the bye week, if the Bears start to string together wins during a favorable stretch of the schedule, they may consider adding reinforcements via trade.
That’s why the situation brewing in Tennessee should have general manager Ryan Poles paying close attention.
The Titans, sitting at 0-3, appear to be a franchise in transition rather than one in contention. And at the center of the conversation is superstar defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons. According to USA Today’s Nate Davis, Simmons could become one of the league’s most intriguing trade candidates at the NFL deadline.
“Game-wrecking interior defensive linemen are among the most valuable commodities in the NFL – and why the Titans signed Simmons to a four-year, $94 million extension two years ago. He’s under contract through 2027 but – right now anyway – it doesn’t appear like Tennessee will be in position to seriously contend by then. Yet rookie GM Mike Borgonzi could definitely expedite his reboot by dealing a 28-year-old player who still has prime years left and could fetch a nice return.”
For a Bears team that has been lacking on the defensive line, the idea of acquiring Simmons is worth exploring.
The Value of Jeffery Simmons’ “Game-Wrecking” Interior Presence
The Bears’ defensive front has shown flashes, but it still lacks the consistency and fear factor that defines championship-caliber units. Montez Sweat is starting to bounce back after a disappointing 2024 campaign, but opposing offenses rarely feel their pocket collapse from the inside.
That’s the exact element Simmons could provide.
Over his career, Simmons has developed into one of the NFL’s most dominant interior forces. His blend of power, quickness, and relentless motor makes him nearly impossible to contain.
For Chicago, adding that type of player would not only elevate the pass rush but also provide some opportunities for the rest of the defense to make plays.
Why Timing Could Be Right in Chicago
The Bears’ upcoming schedule features several winnable games, and if they capitalize, Poles could find himself in a position to buy at the deadline rather than sell. In that scenario, Simmons represents the type of acquisition that could transform not just the defense but the entire team.
Of course, a deal won’t come cheap. Simmons is under contract through 2027, and Tennessee would likely demand significant draft capital in return. But Poles has shown a willingness to be aggressive when the right opportunity presents itself.
If the Titans’ season continues to spiral, GM Mike Borgonzi might decide the best course of action is to accumulate assets rather than cling to a star player whose prime years may be wasted in a rebuild. In that case, the Bears should definitely be one of the first teams to make a phone call.
