The Chicago Bears enter the season with more question marks than they’d like to have. The unfortunate reality of the situation is that until the Bears figure things out at the highest level, there will continue to be questions. They seem to be a decent team on paper, but that has to be proven on the field.Â
There are also some question marks about players on their roster and their future, including Cole Kmet. Kmet has been an excellent piece for the Bears over the past few years, but after selecting former Michigan standout Colston Loveland in the first round, some believe that his time in Chicago could be coming to an end.Â
That includes Bleacher Report’s Khristopher Knox, who recently proposed a trade idea to send him to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The trade would net the Bears a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick.Â
“Kmet has been a valuable piece of Chicago’s offense since being drafted in 2020, and he’s amassed 2,592 receiving yards in his Bears career. However, Chicago just used the 10th overall pick on tight end Colston Loveland, which caused the Bears to defend Kmet’s role…
“The Jaguars would be wise to inquire about Kmet,” Knox wrote. “They have a budding tight end in Brenton Strange, but they also lost Evan Engram in free agency. The Jags should be looking to put as much talent around Trevor Lawrence as they can this season, and they do have some coaching ties to Chicago. Former Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron now serves as Jacksonville’s passing game coordinator.”
Will Bears keep Cole Kmet?
Loveland has been dealing with a shoulder injury for quite some time, and according to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, that could impact what the Chicago Bears plan to do.Â
However, she also reported that because he had a shoulder injury, and it still remains uncertain how he feels, the Bears wouldnât have a decision on Kmet early in the year. To add, she noted that the team still wants to use him in a significant role, so that should be somewhat telling of the Bears’ plans to trade him.Â
âLoveland won’t see the field for several months while he continues to rehab his shoulder, so early indications of how Chicago will utilize the rookie and veteran tight end Cole Kmet won’t come until later.Â
âThe Bears are adamant Kmet will maintain a significant role despite a dip in his production last year. Kmet went from 719 yards and six TDs in 2023 to 474 and four playing with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams in 2024,â Cronin wrote.
Chicago Will Have to Wait on Trading Cole Kmet
If the Chicago Bears want to trade Kmet, they’ll have to hope that the injury he suffered on Tuesday isn’t significant. According to Mark Carman, Kmet left the field with an injury. According to reports, there isn’t a reason for his injury yet, but there should be one given sometime in the near future if it’s anything that will keep him out for more than a couple of days.Â
âCole Kmet visibly upset leaving the field with a trainer. Has yet to return,â he wrote.
