Bears Trade Proposal Moves Fan Favorite to AFC Contender After Colston Loveland News

The Chicago Bears made some telling decisions during the NFL draft, selecting Colston Loveland with the 10th pick and Luther Burden III with the No. 39 pick. Many believed coming into the year that Burden was one of the top wide receiver prospects in the draft, while Loveland was the first tight end selected.

For a few players on the current Bears roster, this is a telling sign, with Cole Kmet potentially losing his job to Loveland. Kmet had a great season a year ago and the campaign prior, perhaps playing better than ever.

With all the question marks the Bears had on their offense, it was impressive that he put up the seasons he did. With Ben Johnson now in town, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the veteran tight end have an even better year, but some question if it’s possible, including AOL.com, which recently proposed a trade idea to send him to the Los Angeles Chargers because of everything they’ve decided to do this offseason.

“Kmet is fresh off a career-best six touchdowns in 2024, but still lost his long-term starting role when the Bears drafted Colston Loveland. The Chargers, transitioning under Greg Roman, need a tight end who can block and catch, and pairing him with Justin Herbert could quietly become one of the league’s better connections,” they wrote.

Loveland’s Injury Outlook

The one thing the Chicago Bears have to be careful about in this situation is that Loveland is still dealing with a shoulder injury.

The Michigan product underwent surgery to repair an AC joint in his shoulder and has been out for the offseason because of it.

When speaking to reporters about the shoulder injury, however, Loveland noted that he’s feeling good and hopes to return to the field soon.

“It’s been good. There haven’t really been live bullets flying yet,” Loveland said, via Aaron McMann of MLive. “We’ll really know in camp once I get out there, doing a lot more stuff.”

A Logjam at Tight End

Loveland is expected to be ready to go for Week 1 for the Chicago Bears, and while Kmet never wants to see one of his teammates injured, that’s bad news for him.

The Los Angeles Chargers make sense as a landing spot, considering Justin Herbert has been searching for options to throw the football to over much of his career. Kmet would give him a big target who is coming off a season in which he posted 474 yards and four touchdowns, with 719 yards and six touchdowns the year before.

Some believe that the Bears will have a tough decision to make, while others believe the writing is already on the wall.

According to Jordan Siegler of Shy City Sports, Kmet and D.J. Moore now have a questionable outlook on their future in Chicago due to the team’s decisions and Johnson being in town.

“Kmet and Moore have already had rude awakenings from Johnson and his staff during OTAs. Johnson yelled at Kmet when the veteran tight end lined up incorrectly for a play during team period. Moore said Johnson addressed his body language following plays and passes that don’t go the way the star receiver wants them to.”

“The Bears drafted Michigan standout Colston Loveland with the No. 10 pick. At No. 39, Chicago selected wide receiver Luther Burden III. On paper, wide receiver and tight end didn’t appear to be the team’s greatest needs,” they wrote.
