Are you sitting dow, Bears Nation? According to a new report, when the Chicago Bears traded for former Cleveland Browns defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, they also inquired about the availability of a player who is far more impactful: $160 million superstar Myles Garrett.
In a November 12 appearance on WGN TV, Kaitlin Starkey asked NFL insider Adam Schefter about the Bears’ moves ahead of the November 4 deadline, and Schefter offered up the following nugget:
“When they were calling the Cleveland Browns, they did ask about Myles Garrett but Myles Garrett wasn’t available,” Schefter said. “They tried to be a little bit more aggressive, but it takes two teams to get a deal done, and in certain cases, other teams weren’t willing to part with a player like Myles Garrett.”
Basically, it sounds as if general manager Ryan Poles knew the answer was almost certainly going to be no, but he asked anyway. It’s common knowledge the Browns $160 million DE has a no-trade clause. Can’t blame Poles for trying, though.
More on Schefter’s Report That Chicago Bears Asked About Browns DE Myles Garrett Before 2025 Trade Deadline

Getty ImagesAccording to Adam Schefter, the Chicago Bears checked on Browns DE Myles Garrett at the trade deadline.
Montez Sweat currently leads the Bears with 5.5 sacks and two forced fumbles, and defensive tackle Gervon Dexter has emerged as the team’s most promising pass rusher on the inside, but beyond that, the Bears don’t have much.
They took a big swing to fill the other edge spot with Dayo Odeyingbo, who signed a three-year, $48 million deal with the team in March. His production wasn’t great. He had 1.0 sacks, 21 tackles and four QB hits in eight starts before tearing his Achilles in team’s Week 9 win over the Bengals. With Odeyingbo out for the remainder of the season, it’s no wonder Poles asked about Garrett.
Defensive end Dominique Robinson has quietly had his best season, posting 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks in six games, but he’s been dealing with an ankle injury. Second-year fifth-rounder Austin Booker, who flashed with 3.0 sacks in the preseason, has added another sack and a forced fumble in limited snaps, but he should get the chance to earn a bigger role moving forward.
Where Does New DE Joe Tryon-Shoyinka Fit In?
A former first-rounder (32nd overall in 2021) for the Buccaneers, Tryon-Shoyinka is a 6-foot-5, 259-pound edge with potential. He had 15 sacks over four seasons with Tampa Bay before signing a one-year, up-to-$4.75 million deal with the Browns last spring.
Tryon-Shoyinka had just nine tackles and no sacks in eight games as a rotational piece in Cleveland this year. The Bears are hoping that defensive coordinator Dennis Allen can help unlock more of the guy who once looked like he could be a long-term starter in Tampa.
In his first game with the Bears Week 10 against the New York Giants, Tryon-Shoyinka played just 16 total snaps (nine against the pass and seven against the run). He finished with one QB hurry. The Bears are likely planning to ease him into the rotation, as he’s new to Allen’s scheme, so he’ll likely see the field more moving forward, particularly if Dom Rob’s ankle issue persists.
