Belgium vs Slovakia preview
It might well be the post-Golden generation stage.
But the Belgian squad which kicks off their Euro 2024 campaign at 5pm on Monday is still a formidable one.
That’s highlighted by the ability to leave Thibaut Courtois out of the squad. An experienced back line, Kevin de Bruyne in midfield and an attack which will include Romelu Lukaku, Leandro Trossard, Lois Openda and Jeremy Doku? They’re a force in anyone’s book.
They’ve not lost a game since losing to Morocco in the World Cup group stages in 2022. That’s 15 games unbeaten heading into the clash with Slovakia.
The Slovaks qualified as runners-up to Portugal in qualifying, with an impressive 22 points from a possible 30.
Interestingly, the bookmakers don’t give them much hope in the competition. They’re down as the underdogs to progress; bigger odds than group rivals Ukraine and Romania.
Back-to-back 4-0 wins in their prep games should have them in good stead. Granted, it was only against San Marino and then Wales but you can only beat what’s put in front of you.
These sides have met three times since 2000, with two 1-1 draws before a 2-1 Belgium win back in 2013 – Eden Hazard was on the scoresheet that night.

The starting line-ups – particularly in the opening game of a tournament – can prove tricky to predict.
In Peter Pekarik’s case, there’s quite the question mark over his involvement in the Slovak side.
He hasn’t played much for Hertha at the age of 37, though was booked in a rare 90 minute appearance in a friendly against Rangers in January.
Has featured prominently for his national side though including in warm-up games and was booked against Portugal in qualifying. Huge price given he could easily start and likely against Leandro Trossard or Jeremy Doku.
