There’s been plenty of talk surrounding the Chicago Bears and their early practices that might make anyone who follows the Windy City nervous. There was the issue of the Bears’ first official day of training camp on July 23 not going well. Quarterback Caleb Williams started out that day by throwing an interception to Bears linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, and it was downhill from there.
That same day, new head coach Ben Johnson actually kicked everyone on the offense’s first team off the field after when they weren’t able to get lined up correctly.
But, it’s not all doom and gloom for the Bears. Despite all the negative attention, there are some great things going on between Johnson and Williams, and that’s exactly what this franchise needs to turn things around. So, don’t get down yet.
Caleb Williams Has a Moment Under Ben Johnson
Johnson is an offensive-minded coach and worked wonders with Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff. He’s expected to bring the best out of Williams, and he may already be doing that.

The Chicago Bears took to social media on Tuesday, Aug. 5, to share footage of an incredible pass made by Williams to Rome Odunze down the field. It’s truly a beautiful throw, and he was easily able to reach Odunze and show his potential.
So, the Williams hater may have spoken too quickly when they looked at early footage from practice and thought he wasn’t going to improve. Johnson has a big project this season, and it’s to turn Williams into a game-winning signal-caller.
The past week, the Bears’ offense has improved, but that didn’t get as much coverage as their struggles early in camp. Seeing this play between Williams and Odunze shows that two of the most important players on the squad are building a good chemistry together and moving in a positive direction.
Caleb Williams Opens Up About Bears Camp
On Tuesday, Aug. 5, the NFL Network caught up with Williams, and the quarterback talked about how it’s been difficult to get used to Johnson’s offense. But, he is fully aware of the situation.
“It’s been a lot,” Williams said. “As it should be. It’s training camp. You know, we’re going to test limits. … [Ben Johnson]’s been adding more and more throughout time. It’s been fun. It’s been good. It’s been challenging. It’s been frustrating when you don’t get it, but that’s what practice is for.”
Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports also sees positives for Williams this season. In a piece published on Wednesday, Aug. 6, he says that alarm bells shouldn’t be going off yet. “As Williams said in his interview with NFL Network, this is what practice is for, and there are bound to be some bumps along the way, especially as the club installs a new — rather sophisticated — offense constructed by Johnson,” he said.
“While the offense didn’t have its best outing during Family Fest on Sunday, it doesn’t sound like it’s been an abject disaster throughout camp,” he added.
So, don’t freak out yet. It’s early, and Johnson and Williams are still getting to know each other.
