Earlier this week, Cincinnati Bengals fans got worried after Joe Burrow made some brutally honest comments about his future at a press conference. Following the comments, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said “other teams in the league took notice of that. I could tell you that for a fact.”
A new report by The Athletic’s Dianna Russini has now surfaced, answering the question: Does Joe Burrow want out of Cincinnati? And the answer she provided was “The answer is no. Burrow, I’m told, hasn’t asked for a trade or even hinted at stepping away.” This report should be a sigh of relief for Bengals fans.
Joe Burrow’s Season
Unfortunately, for the Cincinnati Bengals and Joe Burrow, the 2025 season has not been a banner year. After starting 2-0, Burrow went down with a turf toe injury that caused him to miss two months of the season. By the time he returned to the starting lineup, the Bengals had faltered to 3-8.
Their slim playoff chances have nearly gone away after losing a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter against Buffalo. Burrow played a role in that collapse as he threw two costly interceptions on back-to-back drives that put the game in the Bills’ hands. This devastating loss led to the worrying comments in the press conference later that week.
Aside from the pair of interceptions, Burrow has looked like the franchise quarterback we’re all used to seeing. He has thrown for over 260 passing yards in each of his two starts since returning from injury, with six passing touchdowns. Unfortunately at 4-9, their playoff chances are practically non-existent and that would signify missing the postseason for the third consecutive year.
A significant factor of the Bengals missing the postseason in three straight years has been the health of Joe Burrow. He’s missed nine games this year, and missed seven games in the 2023 season. This year, the Bengals went 1-8 in his absence despite getting some strong games out of Joe Flacco. In 2023, Jake Browning led the team to a 4-3 record, but it was still not enough to make it into the postseason.
Due to his comments, people made the comparison to Andrew Luck, who retired in shocking fashion at the age of 29.In Russini’s report, she addressed the comparison, saying a person close to Burrow said, ‘Nothing matters to him but playing this game and winning a Super Bowl.
Bengals’ Playoff Chances
Despite their 4-9 record, the Bengals still have a small chance of sneaking into the postseason due to the weak AFC North. According to the New York Times playoff simulator, they currently have a 3% chance of making it into the postseason. Winning their remaining four games would elevate that to 28%.
Up next for them is the Ravens, a team they beat on Thanksgiving in Burrow’s first game back. Following that game, the Bengals will have three matchups against teams below .500. The opportunity to sneak into the playoffs is there, but they’ll require help from opposing teams. Either way, Bengals fans can take comfort in knowing their franchise quarterback is not going anywhere soon.
