Biff Poggi, Michigan’s Interim HC: 5 Fast Facts You Need To Know

Though more than 18 months after hoisting the national championship, the Michigan Wolverines are still feeling the fallout of Connor Stalions and the sign-stealing scandal that rocked college football.

With head coach Sherrone Moore taking a two-game suspension imposed by the school after he was found to have violated NCAA rules, his replacement has been named

Biff Poggi will be the Wolverines’ interim head coach over the next two games, replacing Moore in their matchups against Central Michigan and Nebraska. Though he is relatively unknown, Poggi will be leading one of the country’s top programs for the next two weeks.

Here’s what you need to know about Michigan’s new interim head coach.

Poggi Was At Michigan Before

Though this will be his first time leading the team, the 2025 college football season isn’t Poggi’s first with the Wolverines, as he was previously the associate head coach under Jim Harbaugh in 2021 and 2022.

Poggi was also an analyst for Michigan in 2016, so this is his third time with the Wolverines over the past decade. Across the three seasons in each of his previous stints, the school has a record of 35-5 with Poggi in the program.

He Was A Head Coach For The Last Two Seasons

In between his two most recent Michigan stints, Poggi was head coach at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He went a combined 6-16 across the 2023 and 2024 seasons, before being fired with two games left in their season last year.

Poggi never finished with more than two conference wins and three regular-season wins in each of his two seasons with Charlotte. It was previously his only career college head coaching experience, but that will now include the two games he is scheduled to lead Michigan over the coming weeks.

He was head coach of the Gilman School from 1996 to 2015 and for St. Frances Academy from 2017 to 2020, both in the high school ranks of Maryland. He won 13 state titles in his 19 years coaching at the Gilman School.

Poggi Played ACC Football

Aside from his coaching career, Poggi has experience playing the game for two different schools. He was an offensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Panthers in 1978 and for the Duke Blue Devils in 1979.

Poggi’s season with Pitt saw the team go a strong 8-4, while his year in Durham saw the team go a combined 2-8-1, with no conference wins.

He Was An Investment Banker

Before his coaching career, but after his playing career, Poggi was a successful investment banker. He reportedly made millions on his company and has since ‘turned the firm over to a handful of his former players,’ according to On3.

Poggi started the company in 1986 with $25,000 from his father-in-law. Decades later, Samuel James Limited is reportedly worth hundreds of millions of dollars, according to ESPN in 2023. He coached high school football in Baltimore during some of his time managing the fund, finding immense success in what at the time were his two part-time jobs.

Poggi Is Quirky

Though his resume speaks for itself, Poggi has made headlines more times than not for his unique sensibilities. Most famously, the coach rips the sleeves of any shirt or jacket he is wearing for a game. Similar to that of North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick, Poggi doesn’t have an interest in sleeves.

With his funny quotes, Poggi has shades of former Montana Technological University head coach Bob Green, famous for his wild comparisons and metaphors whenever he was in front of a microphone.

Poggi also known for his blunt messaging to his players and the media, but is loved by the coaches he has worked with. When speaking in the past about Michigan’s interim head coach, Harbaugh had only good things to say.

“Biff has been a tremendous asset to our University of Michigan Football program, providing support and mentorship to our coaching staff and players,” Harbaugh said. “He has a great football mind, knows how to prepare a team during the week and on game day, and is a coach that aims to change the lives of his players in a positive way.”

Poggi will lead Michigan against Central Michigan in Week 3 and against Nebraska in Week 4. After losing to the Oklahoma Sooners in Week 2, the Wolverines fell to a 1-1 record, now 23rd in the AP Poll.
