This offseason, the Buffalo Bills ensured they would improve the wide receiver room. The team signed veteran receivers Joshua Palmer, Elijah Moore, and Laviska Shenault. Palmer is a lock to make the 53-man roster since they gave him a three-year, $29 million deal. However, Moore and Shenault will be fighting for a roster spot.
The Bills Added Elijah Moore This Spring
Moore was a second-round pick in 2021 by the New York Jets. He only played two seasons in New York, being traded to the Cleveland Browns.
In two seasons with the Browns, Moore caught 1,178 receiving yards and three touchdowns in 34 games. So far through Moore’s four-year career, he has yet to play with a great quarterback. The best signal caller Moore has been paired with is Joe Flacco. Flacco played with Moore in New York and Cleveland.
In 61 games, Moore has recorded 2,162 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.
Things will be different this time for Moore since he will be playing with one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, Josh Allen. Sometimes, a receiver needs great quarterback play for them to break out, and that could be what Moore needs.
With only four weeks before the regular season, the Bills will be making some harsh roster decisions along the way. Since Moore isn’t locked into any long-term contract, he could be looking for a new team to play for this season.
Moore Could Be Cut
Matt Warren from Buffalo Rumblings thinks Moore could be a possible cut candidate this month.
“Moore was tearing it up in spring practices, but has been out of training camp with an injury. The best ability is availability,” Warren wrote. “His contract is fully guaranteed, but if he signed with another team, it would offset the majority of the remaining $1.75 million anyway. If he is vying for the roster as the fifth receiver without playing special teams, it is an uphill climb. Meanwhile, Curtis Samuel has almost $7 million in fully guaranteed salary right now.”
Moore was injured in the early part of training camp but has made a return. A problem the 25-year-old receiver is going to have to deal with is having Palmer and Curtis Samuel locked into heavy deals in front of him.
While Palmer has a big contract, so does Samuel, who’s locked into a three-year, $24 million contract.
Moore could make the active roster since he has shown he can play special teams and even line up in the backfield at times and run the ball. The Browns sometimes tried to line up Moore at running back so the Bills could try to do the same.
With starting running back James Cook holding in and not practicing due to contract reasons, the Bills could use more people who can take running back snaps. Moore would likely only have one or two running back snaps per game, but he could cause the defense to be confused.
It will be interesting to see how the Bills handle their receiver room and if Moore will make the roster.
