The Buffalo Bills begin training camp this week, and it’s now time for the team to start making tough roster decisions.
Every year, the top teams in the NFL have to make hard roster decisions since many position groups are deep, but there can only be 53 players on the active roster heading into the regular season.
One position group the Bills are strong at is wide receiver after the team upgraded the room this offseason.
When Buffalo traded away receiver Stefon Diggs last season to the Houston Texans, there was a chance the position group was going to take a step back, but that didn’t happen.
Buffalo Added To The WR Room This Spring
Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman, along with Amari Cooper, helped quarterback Josh Allen win the NFL’s Most Valuable Player Award last year.
Cooper is not currently with the Bills, but remains a free agent, which means he could return to Buffalo; however, it seems unclear at the moment.
The Bills also went out this offseason and signed two free-agent receivers who can contribute to the team from Day 1, Josh Palmer and Elijah Moore.
Moore and Palmer could be keys to the Bills offense this season, but there’s still another receiver on the team that can make an impact.
Last offseason, the Bills signed eighth-year veteran receiver Curtis Samuel to a three-year, $24 million deal.
In 14 games last season, Samuel recorded 253 receiving yards and one score, which isn’t what the team was looking for out of a player making eight million a season.
Since Samuel does have a pretty heavy contract, there is a chance he still will remain on the roster this season, even with all the upgrades the team made at receiver this spring.
Curtis Samuel Could Make The Bills Roster
Brandon Ray from Fansided thinks Samuel is going to make the 53-man roster even though he doesn’t deserve it.
“Last year, the Bills signed Curtis Samuel in hopes that he would be a versatile weapon in the offense. Instead, he dealt with injuries and was not productive whatsoever. Contractually, the Bills can’t afford to release him so unless he completely falls apart in training camp he will be on the roster,” Ray wrote. “The Bills went out and signed Joshua Palmer and Elijah Moore to bring more separation and speed to the offense. These two should be able to do more damage than Samuel.”
It will be interesting to see how the Bills handle their receiving room during training camp. There is a chance Samuel won’t make the opening-day roster, as the team has added two receivers who could potentially take his spot.
The lack of production from Samuel last season probably was the reason why Buffalo went out and signed Palmer and Moore. The only thing that is saving Samuel at this point is his contract.
Buffalo opens their 2025 season at home on Sunday Night Football against the Baltimore Ravens, and there is a chance Samuel will be taking significant snaps in that game.
