The Buffalo Bills front five is finally at full power after the team announced Thursday night that they would be activating Josh Allen’s best protector, Spencer Brown, off of the physically unable to perform list.
The team broke the news with an X post at 4:30 PM.
Brown was seen for the first time all camp earlier Tuesday afternoon when ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg posted a video of the tackle working out of pads off to the side of practice.
“RT Spencer Brown (back) working to the side for the first time in camp,” the post read. “LB Dorian Williams (calf) over on the side field with him.”
Spencer Brown’s History of Back Problems
The bad news for Bills fans is that Brown’s back injury is not a one time thing. He has been dealing with flare ups since receiving a back surgery back in 2021. The good news for Bills fans is that it has not affected his availability thus far in his career. He has started 46 of the possible 51 games in the last three seasons.
Even so, head coach Sean McDermott did not seem too worried about the flare up last week when he addressed the media.
“Well, you know, he had some back injuries in his history to this point. I think, really, it’s just a little bit of a flare-up right now,” said McDermott. “So just getting in the right spot so we can calm down and he can push forward here.”
Brown is entering the second year of his 2024 mega extension that gave him four more seasons at $18 million a year, for a total of $72 million.
Bills Offensive Line Depth
The Bills have not had to worry about having a back up right tackle in recent years, considering Brown played every single snap of the 2023 season. However, with his back acting up there have been opportunities for other young tackles to chisel out a role.
The right tackle two battle is taking place between rookie Chase Lundt and last year’s six man, Ryan Van Denmark. BuffaloDown’s Michael Haney told us what to expect from the UConn tackle.
“While Lundt is new to the NFL game, he already has plenty of experience under his belt,” Haney writes. “He was a four-year starter at Connecticut, where he logged over 3,000 snaps. He’s limited athletically, but he has enough physical strength to match up with NFL defensive ends.”
Additionally, it is worth noting that two other lineman are still dealing with injuries in the Bills camp. Seocnd year lineman Sedrick Van Pran-Granger has missed extended time alongside fellow trench man Alec Anderson.
The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia says this has opened the door for guard Mike Edwards to fight for time.
“Offensive lineman Edwards put together a quietly good summer as an undrafted rookie, to the point that the Bills kept him on the practice squad the entire year,” Buscaglia writes. “At 6-feet-5 and 363 pounds, you will not miss Edwards on the field. They signed him as an undrafted free agent from Campbell University as a bit of a project, and he has shown some real potential in transferring from college offensive tackle to NFL guard.”
Edwards has been running with the twos at training camp.
