The Buffalo Bills made some veteran additions to their wide receiving corps this offseason, with former rival Elijah Moore one of the biggest new names to join the team.
But despite coming to the team with some anticipation, Moore has failed to stand out during training camp and the team’s first preseason game and could now find himself fighting for a roster spot. Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport suggested the Bills should cut Moore, giving room for the team’s better-performing pass-catchers on the roster.
Elijah Moore Faces Sharp Warning
Davenport, who suggested cut candidates for all 32 NFL teams, admitted that Moore would seem an odd candidate for the cut pile. He comes to the Bills with a strong track record of success, making 200 career receptions for 2,162 yards and nine touchdowns.
Moore was one of the more reliable receivers for an otherwise stagnant New York Jets offense last season, notching 43 receptions for 538 yards and a career-high five touchdowns.
But Davenport suggested the Bills could give a nod to their better-performing receivers.
“However, the reality is Elijah Moore won’t be making an impact for the Bills in 2025,” Davenport wrote. “Yes, he has shown the occasional flash over four NFL seasons. But he hasn’t impressed in camp, didn’t catch a pass in Buffalo’s first preseason game and is stuck on the Bills depth chart behind Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, Joshua Palmer and Curtis Samuelâat least.”
Davenport wrote that it could come at a high cost for the Bills, who would need to eat $1.75 million of Moore’s contract — though that would be erased if he signed with another team, which he almost certainly would.
The Bills have shown plenty of faith in Moore despite his lack of production in training camp and the preseason. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady said in June that the veteran receiver will pair well with quarterback Josh Allen. He would also be one of the fastest players on offense with a 40-yard dash time south of 4.4 seconds, making him a valuable deep threat.
“You get a guy like Elijah, I feel like he’s living here, wanting to just kind of embody it, play inside, play outside, figure out, hey, what can he do, what is [quarterback] Josh [Allen] thinking on these plays?” Brady said, via SI.com.
Allen has also shared some praise for Moore.
“Smart guy. He knows his stuff, and he’s a fun guy to be around, too,” Allen said after the first day of training camp in July.
Surprises for Bills Wide Receiving Corps
While it would still be unlikely for the Bills to cut ties with Moore, there could be some other surprises in the wide receiver room this offseason. Former practice squad stalwart Tyrell Shavers has worked his way up the depth chart and turned in a strong performance in the team’s first preseason game.
Shavers could challenge veteran Lavishka Shenault, who was listed below Shavers on the team’s first official depth chart. But Shenault also has value as a return specialist, which will be another tight race this offseason.
