Bills’ Cut Starter After Debut In Unusually Viral Roster Move

As NFL fans we rarely have to think about our team’s punters. Punts are when we start our bathroom break early, or head to the fridge for a re-up. But it turns out Buffalo Bills’ head coach Sean McDermott was none-too-impressed with the Bills Week 1 punter, Brad Robbins, during his debut with the team.

Bills Burr: Veteran punter Cameron Johnston is signing with Buffalo, per sources. Johnston, 33, has appeared in 96 NFL games with three teams,” writes NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. “Now he takes over punting duties for the #Bills, who are waiving Brad Robbins.”

Robbins had four punts in his first game with the Bills Sunday night. He struck a long of 48, pinned one down inside the 20, but ultimately posted a net average of 38 yards per punt. A number that was clearly not good enough for coach McDermott.

“Didn’t feel like we were where we needed to be maybe,” McDermott said on Wednesday. “And so, like anything else, we’re always looking to see how we can improve.”

With a new kicker coming to town as well, coach McDermott says he is focusing on making expectations clear. Special teams is a third of the game, after all.

“Making sure expectations of one’s job is clear and also trying to simplify and build some order into what we do,” McDermott continued. “That’s the first step in mastery, really, is simplification and order. So, I think that’s important for anyone at any position.”

Cameron Johnston Looks Like Bill Burr, And The Internet Loves It

You may have picked up on Pelissero’s pun earlier in the article. “Bills Burr” is a nod to the fact that the 33-year-old punter does in fact resemble comedian Bill Burr.

Shockingly so if I may add.

You throw in the fact that Johnston also kind of looks like Bills’ head coach Sean McDermott, you get utter mayhem.

Since we are doing the meme thing, I might as well provide the die-hard Bills fans with a full comprehensive timeline of the Cameron Johnston x Bill Burr saga.

Yes Bill Burr is aware of Cameron Johnston.

Yes Cameron Johnston is aware of Bill Burr.

No, neither have been seen in a room together. Makes you think.

Johnston’s Eight Year NFL Career

Okay, back to football. Johnston has made a career out of punting in the NFL. The Australian born leg went to college at Ohio State University and began his career with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018. He won the Super Bowl with the team as a rookie, and played three more years in Philly before hopping over to Houston.

In his first year with the Texans he lead the entire NFL in punting yards. In 2023 he spent the first four games on the IR before returning to action in his third and final year in Houston.

Last season Johnston was a Pittsburgh Steeler but he suffered a season ending knee injury in Week 1. He did not return to the team and will see his first action in over a year in the Bills’ Week 2 divisional matchup against the New York Jets.
