The Buffalo Bills selected former Duke defensive tackle DeWayne Carter with their final pick on Day 2 of the 2024 NFL draft.
Carter appeared in 11 games last season, recording 14 total tackles, 3.0 quarterback hits, and 1.0 pass defensed. The 24-year-old once again earned a spot on the 53-man roster this year and looked to have a bigger role on the Bills’ defensive line rotation.
However, as NFL insider Jordan Schultz first reported on August 31, “Carter tore his Achilles and will miss the entire 2025 season. The talented 2024 3rd-round pick was poised to be part of Buffalo’s defensive rotation this year. A tough blow.”
ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg revealed he suffered the injury during practice on August 27. Carter confirmed the devastating news by posting on X, “This is all a part of my testimony. I will be back. ✝️ John 13:7.”
A few hours later, Carter posted a photo from the hospital, preparing to undergo surgery to repair his torn Achilles tendon.
DeWayne Carter’s Wife, Amanda Carter, Gushed Over the Bills DT’s Resilience Amid This ‘Tough’ Time
Carter’s wife, Amanda Carter, who first started dating the defensive tackle over a decade ago, shared her husband’s hospital photo on her Instagram Stories and wrote, “Tough doesn’t even begin to describe what the past few days have been.
“But even in the middle of it all, he still finds a reason to smile. Life isn’t always fair, but the sun will shine again. The comeback will be greater than the setback. This is all part of his story.”

Amanda has been a constant source of support throughout Carter’s entire career. When Carter received the call that he was the Bills’ No. 95 overall pick, she was right by his side.
The couple announced their engagement on Instagram last year. They captioned the post, “4.22.2024 -The beginning of forever.🤍” They officially tied the knot in New Albany, Ohio, on July 5, 2025.
The longtime loves shared the news in a joint Instagram post and wrote, “‘I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.’— Song of Solomon 6:3. 07.05.2025 — the most beautiful day of our lives. From this day forward, and for the rest of eternity — I am yours, and you are mine. THE CARTERS 🤍.”
Who Replaces DeWayne Carter On the Bills’ Defensive Line?
While Carter’s injury is a hit to the Bills’ depth before the season starts, they still have four healthy defensive tackles on the active roster: Ed Oliver, DaQuan Jones, T.J. Sanders, and Deone Walker. Buffalo will eventually have Larry Ogunjobi and Michael Hoecht, both of whom start the season serving a six-week suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substance policy.
A few days before Carter’s injury, the Bills also brought back a familiar face, re-signing defensive tackle Jordan Phillips to the practice squad. It’s unclear if Buffalo will make a move to sign a new defensive tackle before the 2025 NFL season starts.
