Bills Encouraged to Reacquire Former Defender in Trade With Dolphins

The Bills head into their bye week facing several concerns after suffering losses in their last two games. Buffalo fell short against the New England Patriots in Week 5, and just eight days later, they lost to the Atlanta Falcons in a tough matchup on “Monday Night Football”.

Buffalo’s defense has been a concern throughout the first part of the season, and it’s an area where the team could improve before the NFL’s Nov. 4 trade deadline, particularly at cornerback.

Bills Urged to Trade For Rasul Douglas

Fansided’s Iestyn Harris thinks the Bills should trade for Miami Dolphins cornerback Rasul Douglas.

“The Buffalo Bills already traded for Rasul Douglas once, and it worked out great,” Harris wrote on Thursday. “Why not try a second time? Douglas started in this secondary for a season and a half, so his familiarity with the defense, both roster and scheme, would be an immediate boon. At 31, Douglas is not the prime physical specimen the team would hope for, but he’s available, an improvement, and healthy. Getting him may not raise the ceiling, but it raises the floor. In 2023, the Bills moved down from the 3rd round to the 5th in the original trade deadline deal with the Green Bay Packers; This would be substantially cheaper.”

Douglas played 24 games for the Bills from 2023 to 2024, where he recorded four interceptions.

The 31-year-old corner was a free agent this offseason, even though the Bills had cornerback issues heading into the year. Buffalo had no desire to bring him back.

Now, with the Bills having issues at corner with rookie Maxwell Hairston out since the start of training camp in July, Buffalo should make a call to the Dolphins.

Douglas Could Be a Cheap Option

With Douglas on a one-year contract, Harris thinks the price to acquire Douglas would be cheap.

“As far as cost, Rasul Douglas would be a cheap trade, making this an attractive option,” Harris added. “If he requested a release, or if the 1-5 Dolphins simply opted to save costs ahead of the offseason, Buffalo may not have to surrender draft capital at all. In the event that this inter-division trade actually occurred, Douglas would not cost much. His contract with Miami was a one-year deal for only $1.57m, of which the Bills would assume only a part. If Miami resigns itself to the draft board, this deal makes a lot of sense for them.”

Typically, teams from the same division avoid trading with one another. However, this situation is quite different. The Dolphins have no realistic shot at making the playoffs, and they would be parting ways with a player who is unlikely to return to the team next season.

The Cleveland Browns have just traded quarterback Joe Flacco to their divisional rival, the Cincinnati Bengals. With Flacco in the final year of his contract and the Browns having little chance of making the playoffs, this move makes sense. A similar situation could unfold between the Bills and Dolphins.
