The Buffalo Bills went crazy in the free-agent wide receiver market this offseason. Buffalo brought in some big-name receivers, Josh Palmer, Elijah Moore, and Laviska Shenault.
Palmer should be a lock to make the 53-man roster, while Moore and Shenault will be battling to earn a spot. One of the reasons Buffalo brought three veteran receivers this offseason was because of what happened last year.
Bills Made A Big Trade In 2024
During the 2024 campaign, the Bills traded for Cleveland Browns receiver Amari Cooper. The 31-year-old receiver was supposed to come in and change the offense. But the opposite happened, and the former Pro Bowler didn’t even reach 300 receiving yards in Buffalo.
Cooper was in the final year of his contract and is currently a free agent. With just over a month before the regular season starts, there is a chance Cooper will be signed. Many NFL teams are trying to figure out their roster needs during training camp. With camp coming to an end over the next few weeks, teams that think they need to add another pass catcher could call the ten-year veteran.
One team that could use a receiver is the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chargers brought back their former 2017 first-round receiver Mike Williams this offseason. Last year, Williams left Los Angeles to play for the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers. With little interest in Williams throughout the league, he decided to head back to the Chargers. However, his stay wasn’t extended because he announced his retirement from the NFL in July.
Amari Cooper Listed As A Fit For Chargers
With the Chargers needing another receiver, Kevin Patra from NFL.com thinks Cooper would be a good fit in Los Angeles.
“Last year wasn’t pretty for Cooper in either Cleveland (24 catches for 250 yards and two TDs in six games) or Buffalo (20 catches for 297 yards and two more scores in eight games), but there should still be gas left in the tank. The 31-year-old can be a boundary weapon and knows how to find space in the red zone,” Patra wrote. “The Chargers lost a receiver who could have provided those skills when Mike Williams decided to retire, abruptly ending his franchise homecoming. The L.A. brass has displayed confidence in the youngsters, but there was a reason Williams was signed to return this offseason in the first place. Cooper could serve as a veteran leader to the green corps. And he wouldn’t be asked to be the go-to weapon, a role Ladd McConkey ran away with last year, instead buffering Quentin Johnston and providing a backstop if rookies Tre Harris or KeAndre Lambert-Smith stumble. Additionally, Cooper appears to be the type of grinder and leader Jim Harbaugh loves.”
Cooper has recorded 10,003 receiving yards and 64 touchdowns over 154 games. With the Chargers being a contender in the AFC, there’s a chance Cooper would want to play for them.
It would be interesting to see a playoff game between the Chargers and the Bills, and what Cooper can bring to the table in the contest.
