The Buffalo Bills are coming out of their bye week with some lingering questions on offense, including the status of a veteran receiver who could be headed to a stint on injured reserve.
Receiver Joshua Palmer was hurt in the team’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6 and has not practiced this week. Head coach Sean McDermott gave a pessimistic update, opening up the possibility that the Bills may need to bring in outside help.
Bills List Joshua Palmer as Week-to-Week
McDermott told reporters on Wednesday that Palmer will be week-to-week as he deals with a sprained ankle. The Bills head coach would not rule out a trip to injured reserve — saying “we’ll see” about his status — but the team had not yet made a decision.
As reporter Jeremy White of WRG 500 noted, that could force the Bills to find help at wide receiver at the upcoming NFL trade deadline.
“Josh Palmer week to week and ‘weâll see’ regarding IR is the perfect excuse to make that trade for a WR to bolster the team. Make the move, say injuries change the math there and ‘we feel good about our guys but our guys are bitten by the injury bug,’ ” White wrote in a post on X.
Palmer has been among the most productive pass-catchers on a Bills team with no true No. 1 wide receiver. He has made 14 receptions for 234 yards, just 53 yards behind receiving leader Dalton Kincaid.
The Bills are looking to stop their two-game losing skid when they face the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. They will likely get a better idea on Palmer’s status at practices on Thursday and Friday.
Bills Could Have Options if They Seek Help
The Bills could have some potential targets if they look to add a receiver ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline. The team has been linked to several veteran pass-catchers, including Las Vegas Raiders receiver Jakobi Meyers, who reiterated his standing trade request this week.
Some league insiders are tempering expectations ahead of the trade deadline. One league executive told Fox Sports that there may be more hype than substance to the existing trade rumors.
“There could be some big-name edge guys and receivers on the move, if teams are willing to move them,” an NFL assistant general manager told the outlet. “But right now my sense is [the media is] expecting more from the [trading] deadline than the rest of the league is.”
Another source said the Bills specifically won’t be making a splash, with an AFC rival more likely to seek out a top wide receiver.
“The Steelers will add a WR,” an NFL source told the outlet. “Itâs hard to predict what level. Maybe Washington, depending on health. And I could see the Bills maybe adding a real cheap guy.”
The Bills could have more help waiting inside the building. The team brought back veteran receiver Gabe Davis, who left in free agency in 2024 and signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Davis saw his season cut short by injury and remains on the practice squad injured reserve, but he could be an option for the Bills in the second half of the season.
