Bills Get Good News on Surprise Head Coaching Candidate

The Buffalo Bills may be stung watching the rival New England Patriots take an easy path to the Super Bowl, but their win on Sunday also paves the way for the Bills to meet with a surprise head coaching candidate.

The Bills have been active in their search for Sean McDermott’s replacement, holding several interviews over the last week. The NFL rules also constrained the Bills from meeting with candidates still in the playoffs, but Sunday’s loss for the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship game now gives Buffalo the green light to meet with an in-demand candidate.

Bills Set to Meet With Josh Allen’s Former Backup

The Bills have leaned toward offensive coaches in their search to replace the defensive-minded McDermott, including interest in one of their former backup quarterbacks. Davis Webb, who backed up quarterback Josh Allen in Buffalo, is the passing game coordinator for the Broncos and already in the running for another head coaching job.

As ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported, Webb is expected to have another interview this week and likely meeting with the Bills as well.

“The Las Vegas Raiders are expected to meet this week with Broncos passing game coordinator/QB coach Davis Webb regarding their head coach vacancy,” Schefter reported in a post on X. “The Bills also want to meet with Webb about their head coach job, but due to NFL rules, must wait until Denver’s season is over, whenever that is.”

The 30-year-old Webb is seen as a strong candidate for the Bills, with SI.com’s Randy Gurzi listing him among the most likely to take over for McDermott.

“Davis Webb isn’t the most experienced candidate out there, but he’s helped the Denver Broncos find success with Bo Nix, who led them to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons,” Gurzi wrote. “That’s why he’s already had four interviews this cycle, and could add one more.”

Bills Have More Surprises in Coaching Search

The Bills have already met with several candidates for the coaching job. Some were expected, like former offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, while others came as a surprise. The latter group includes former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers, whose only coaching experience to date has come at the high school level.

As ESPN noted, Allen has expressed his admiration for Rivers when he came out of retirement this year to lead the shorthanded Indianapolis Colts.

“[Rivers’ return is] really cool,” Allen said in December. “I didn’t know what to expect, obviously, when he came back, but it’s really awesome. Just the way that he’s gone back out there. He was deciphering that defense extremely well and making some plays for his team, and it was inspiring to watch.”

Rivers said this season that he would be open to taking an NFL coaching job, saying he believed he could do it.

“I do think, as humbly as I can say it, that I could coach at this level,” Rivers said. “I know enough about the game and about the guys, and from a leadership standpoint, camaraderie, all that comes with it. But again, that’s not something that I’m sitting here pursuing.”
