The Buffalo Bills are looking to win their second straight game when they take on the Houston Texans on “Thursday Night Football”.
Houston is currently on a two-game winning streak, and one reason is backup quarterback Davis Mills.
Mills started the last two matchups due to starting quarterback C. J. Stroud being out with a concussion, and it looks like Mills will get another start on Thursday.
C.J. Stroud Ruled Out For “Thursday Night Football”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday, “Texans QB CJ Stroud is out for Thursday night’s matchup vs the Bills. He still has not cleared out of concussion protocol.”
Even though Stroud is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL while healthy, Mills has done a great job filling in for him and threw for 566 yards and three touchdowns to only one interception in the last two games.
After the Texans’ 16-13 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, Houston head coach DeMeco Ryan had great things to say about his quarterback.
“Davis did a great job all day of, really, protecting the football, making great decisions,” Ryans said, via Josh Buckhalter. And no play bigger than him connecting with Nico there, when we needed it most, in the two-minute drive. That was such a huge play for us. And Nico and Davis, that connection really took off in the second half, which we needed. We needed a spark. We started getting the ball to Nico, and we saw, he made play after play after play. So, did an outstanding job, putting us in position there to make that field goal a lot easier.”
Mills is doing his part, helping the Texans win games, and he’s gotten the Texans into the Wild Card playoff window, which is why the Bills need to beat Houston on Thursday.
The Bills Need to Beat Houston For Many Reasons
Currently, the Bills hold a 7-3 record and are the first wild-card team, while the Texans sit as the first team out of the playoffs with a 5-5 record.
If the Bills lose to the Texans, they’ll drop a game in the wild-card standings while Houston picks one up. Additionally, the Texans would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Bills since they beat them.
Buffalo’s primary objective shouldn’t just be to squeeze into the playoffs as a wild card team; instead, it should aim to clinch the division title. Currently, the New England Patriots lead the division with a record of 9-2 and have already defeated the Bills in their head-to-head matchup this season.
The good news is the Bills will play the Patriots again this season, but the game is in New England, so Buffalo will have to pull off a road win to get the job done.
Buffalo needs to keep winning games to keep its wild-card playoff hopes alive while also staying just a game or two behind the Patriots in the AFC East.
