Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott doesn’t get to cast a ballot for league MVP, but knows who it would go to if he did.
The Bills head coach made an unusually strong statement in favor of Josh Allen following Sunday’s come-from-behind win over the New England Patriots. Allen was near-perfect in the second half as the Bills erased a 21-0 deficit to beat their division rival 35-31.
After the game, McDermott made a pitch for his quarterback to repeat as the league’s MVP.
Sean McDermott Pleads Josh Allen’s Case
As SI.com’s Albert Breer noted, McDermott is not known for making declarative statements and normally sidesteps questions that might put one player over another. But the Bills head coach did not hesitate when Breer asked him after Sunday’s game what he thought about Allen’s MVP odds.
âI donât do a very good job of knowing whatâs going on around the league, but I canât, in my mind, imagine anybody else has done more for their team on a more consistent basis than Josh Allen,â McDermott told Breer. âI mean, who out there is playing better?â
Breer said he informed McDermott that Allen is not among the front-runners, with Drake Maye and Matthew Stafford taking the lead. McDermott said he believes Allen will still rise to the top.
âThatâll work itself out in the end,â he replied. âAnd everyoneâs going to vote how they want to vote. But there is absolutely no question in my mind who the MVP of this league is.â
Allen will need more strong performances over the final three weeks of the season to creep back into MVP contention — and likely need some struggles from Maye and Stafford as well. Allen is the reigning league MVP, but Jeffrey Chadiha of NFL.com suggested that repeating is an even more difficult task.
âThe great thing about winning the MVP is that it marks your place in history. The bad thing is that previous winners generally must do a hell of a lot more to win it a second time,â Chadiha wrote. âAllen is on pace to have a better statistical season than he did during his 2024 MVP campaign â he should finish with more passing yards, rushing yards and touchdowns â but man, heâs had some flops.â
Josh Allen’s Efficient Day
Allen completed 19-of-28 passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns in Sunday’s win, avoiding mistakes after the Bills were left with no margin for error in the second half.
As NFL.com’s Dante Koplowitz-Fleming noted after the game, Allen tied Tom Brady and Russell Wilson for the second-most wins by a quarterback in the first eight seasons of their career. He also joined some rare company with his touchdown production.
“Allen has accounted for at least 35 touchdowns in six career seasons, joining Tom Brady (seven such seasons), Aaron Rodgers (7) and Drew Brees (6) as the only players in NFL history with at least six seasons of 35-plus offensive touchdowns,” Koplowitz-Fleming wrote.
Allen also stood alone in setting one record.
“And now for some Allen singularity: 2025 is the third season in his career with at least 25 passing touchdowns and 12 rushing touchdowns,” Koplowitz-Fleming added. “No other player in NFL history has a single season with 25 pass touchdowns and 12 rush touchdowns.”
