The Buffalo Bills secured an iconic victory against the Baltimore Ravens last week. Following this impressive win, they are now among the favorites to win the Super Bowl.
Buffalo will need to add some help to their roster to make the Super Bowl, and Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report thinks the Bills could be a possible fit for Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome.
Bills Could Be Fit For Newsome
“Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II may also be difficult to obtain early in the season,” Knox wrote Wednesday. “Following a terrific performance against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1âalbeit in a lossâCleveland’s defense again looks capable of making the Browns competitive. Newsome, meanwhile, was fantastic back on the perimeter for Cleveland. He helped limit Joe Burrow to just 113 passing yards while helping the Browns effectively shut down Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. The 25-year-old is on the fifth-year option, though, and could become a strong trade candidate if the Browns’ season quickly spirals out of control.”
The Bills and the Browns have had some trade history, and Knox mentions the trade that sent the Browns receiver Amari Cooper to the Bills last season.
“If that happens, there’s a good chance Cleveland will chase a quarterback in the 2026 draft and could use all the extra draft capital it can get,” Knox added. “Given Newsome’s combination of age, positional value and great recent play, the Browns could expect a quality Day 2 pick in returnâthat’s the price Cleveland got for wideout Amari Cooper at last year’s trade deadline.”
Browns Will Struggle This Year
The Browns are expected to be one of the worst teams in the NFL this season, and Newsome is in the last year of his contract. If Cleveland has no plans of signing Newsome back next season, then trading him for a draft pick makes sense.
Cleveland is in a win-later mode while the Bills are in a win-now mode. Newsome went from being the slot corner to starting on the outside when cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. tore his Achilles in training camp.
Emerson will also be a free agent at the end of the season, but has a good chance of returning to the Browns. He will be less expensive to sign since he is coming off the torn Achilles, and Cleveland might be the only team that takes a chance on him due to his injury.
Buffalo Dealing With Corner Injuries
The Bills are dealing with their own injuries at cornerback, with their first-round pick, Maxwell Hairston, being placed on injured reserve due to a right knee injury suffered throughout training camp. Hairston will be out at least the next three games, but could return after that.
Buffalo’s veteran cornerback Tre’Davious White has been dealing with a groin injury and was limited at practice this week.
The Bills’ secondary depth was an issue throughout training camp, and they need to address the problem through a trade soon.
Buffalo should monitor the Browns over the next month to see if they will part ways with Newsome.
