It’s no secret that the Buffalo Bills struggled heading into their bye week, losing their last two games.
In Week 5, the Bills fell to the New England Patriots 23-20 and turned around a week later, losing to the Atlanta Falcons 24-14.
The Bills struggled offensively in both games, and scoring just 34 points combined in two games isn’t going to get the job done.
Buffalo needs to rethink its offense before the NFL’s Nov. 4 trade deadline. While the Bills don’t need a running back since James Cook is having a great season, rushing for 537 yards and five touchdowns in six games, the team could look for a receiver.
Bills Could Trade For Calvin Ridley
While there are a few receivers that could be available at the trade deadline, the Sporting News’ Vinnie Iyer thinks Tennessee Titans receiver Calvin Ridley would be the best fit for Buffalo.
“Ridley is hurt for now (hamstring), but he’s being lost in the Titans‘ youth movement passing game around No. 1 overall pick rookie QB Cam Ward,” Iyer wrote on Thursday. “Ridley would make more sense attached to a QB in Josh Allen who can push the ball deep well to him and also make him a red zone priority, much like he was during his young heyday with the Falcons.”
The Titans star has recorded 16 receptions for 290 yards and zero touchdowns in six games this season.
The 30-year-old receiver is in his seventh NFL season and has recorded 5,665 receiving yards and 40 touchdowns in 89 games.
The Titans Might Not Want to Part With Ridley
Given that the Titans’ offense has struggled throughout the season and the team is currently 1-6, there has been speculation about trading Ridley. However, since he signed a four-year, $92 million contract last offseason, the Titans are committed to him until 2028, which means there isn’t an immediate incentive to part ways with him.
Just because the Titans aren’t performing well as a football team doesn’t mean they will part ways with one of their best players. Tennessee needs to focus on both the present and the future. The biggest concern for the Titans is figuring out how to help Ward start improving after his rough start this season, during which he has thrown for 1,356 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions through the first seven games.
If keeping Ridley helps Ward become a better quarterback, then there is no price the Titans would be willing to pay to move Ridley.
The Titans are already facing challenges with their receiving core, especially after parting ways with veteran Tyler Lockett on Monday, leaving them even thinner in that position.
Buffalo should consider adding a receiver at the trade deadline, but Ridley may not be the best option. They don’t need a superstar; just a player who can stretch defenses to enhance the passing game for Allen and other receivers.
The Bills will return to action this Sunday and face off against the Panthers. Carolina has been a surprising contender this season, boasting a 4-3 record, so Buffalo must stay sharp and not underestimate them.
