The Buffalo Bills have done some mid-season retooling of their wide receiver room, activating returning veteran Gabe Davis and adding Mecole Hardman.
But the team could have another late addition to the offense, with an insider suggesting they are a frontrunner to land another veteran with 10,000 career yards on his resume. The New Orleans Saints are expected to cut ties with the well-traveled receiver Brandin Cooks, with the Bills named as one of the top potential landing spots.
Bills Could Target Veteran Pass-Catcher
Bleacher Report’s Adam Wells suggested the Bills could be one of the most motivated teams to land Cooks, noting the team’s struggles on offense. Wells noted that the Bills already tried to add some firepower to the offense, making a run at this month’s NFL trade deadline but coming up short.
“The Bills tried to make a big deadline splash with an offer for Jaylen Waddle, but the Miami Dolphins reportedly turned it down because they didn’t want to trade him within the division unless Buffalo would pay an even steeper price than they were asking from other teams,” Wells noted.
“Buffalo also pursued Cook’s teammate in New Orleans, Chris Olave, to no avail. Receiver seems to have taken on an even bigger priority for the Bills after Keon Coleman was benched for Sunday’s win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for being late to a team meeting last week.”
Buffalo’s need may have grown even more acute after Hardman was placed on injured reserve this week. He had a strong start in last week’s win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but was knocked out of the game with a calf injury and will miss at least the next month.
The 32-year-old Cooks has plenty of experience, making 729 career receptions for 9,697 yards with 60 touchdowns and adding 341 career rushing yards and two rushing scores. He has slowed in recent years, making just 19 receptions for 165 yards and no touchdowns with the Saints this year.
Saints Delay Release of Brandin Cooks
Though the Saints had been expected to release Cooks early in the week, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the process was delayed due to technical issues with his contract.
“Saints still plan to release veteran WR Brandin Cooks, but it has not happened yet due to contractual technicalities that the two sides still are working through, per league sources,” Schefter reported on Thursday. “His release still is expected to occur in the coming days.”
The Bills have a 10-day break after falling to the Houston Texans on Thursday night, so they could still add Cooks and have time to get him up to speed should they choose to add the veteran. Cooks is subject to waivers but expected to clear due to his contract, then will become a free agent.
The Bills have some needs in their wide receiving corps due to injuries to Hardman and Curtis Samuel and uncertainty surrounding Keon Coleman. The second-year receiver was benched for both of the last two games related to a disciplinary issue, with the team not giving an indication of when he will return to the field.
