The Buffalo Bills are nearing the end of the second year of their “everybody eats” approach to the offense, but struggles from the wide receiving corps have started to show the limitations of the approach.
One insider believes the Bills will address that in the coming months, adding a “premium” wide receiver who can become a No. 1 target for quarterback Josh Allen.
Bills Predicted to Make Big Investment in Wide Receiver Room
The Bills took on the “everybody eats” approach after the departures of Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis during the 2024 offseason. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady instead moved to an offense that spread the targets around to a wider group of pass-catchers.
While the approach worked well in 2024, with the Bills putting together one of the league’s top passing attacks, it has shown cracks this year as the wide receiver group struggled and defenses have put increasing pressure on Allen.
SI.com’s Daniel Flick believes the Bills will address the lack of a true No. 1 receiver in next year’s NFL draft, taking USC receiver Makai Lemon with their first-round pick. Flick noted that the Bills decided not to invest much draft capital into wide receivers last year and predicted that will change next year.
“The Bills waited until the seventh round to draft a receiver in 2025,” Flick wrote. “They shouldnât wait nearly as long in 2026 to give Josh Allen a premium target.”
Flick noted that Lemon’s draft stock is rising after a breakout season at USC.
“Lemon entered the year in the shadow of fellow USC receiver JaâKobi Lane, a potential Day 2 pick, but ended it as the Biletnikoff winner,” Flick wrote. “The 5′ 11″, 195-pound Lemon specializes in the slot, where his quickness and route nuance pay dividends, and heâs a sure-handed playmaker who thrives after the catch.”
Lemon made 79 receptions for 1,156 yards and 11 touchdowns this season.
Bills Could Face Keon Coleman Decision
The Bills did take a big swing at wide receiver in 2024, using their top pick on Keon Coleman. While he showed promise in his rookie season, Coleman was sidetracked by an injury and has struggled with maturity issues in his second season.
Coleman was benched twice for missing team meetings and struggled to find a role in the offense, falling off the pace from his rookie season. Coleman appeared in 12 games with six starts this year, making 36 receptions for 355 yards with four touchdowns.
After deciding to bench Coleman for the team’s win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Bills head coach Sean McDermott said he believed Coleman had received the message.
âThat was my decision,â McDermott said. âIt is disappointing, but I still believe in the young man. We get to a certain point, and Iâve got to do something. I try and give the guys a kind of a strike approach. âHey, you get a chance to show your teammates thatâs not really who you are.â When it happens again, then I step in. I believe he will learn from it. He takes it seriously. He will move forward in a way of growing from this, and thatâs the whole goal.â
Coleman also said after the benching that he would shape up.
âIâve got to be better, doing what Iâm supposed to do, doing the right things,â Coleman said.
