The Buffalo Bills have a lot to feel good about heading into training camp starts up in July, because they truly have one of the most solid teams in the NFL right now. At the helm of that team is MVP-winning Josh Allen, who is one of the greatest quarterbacks of his generation.
Even though Allen has never been to the big game, his numbers speak for themselves, and he stands among the greatest quarterbacks of not only his era but also the NFL, in general. That’s why it’s surprising to see him left off an important roster.
It’s a holiday weekend, and that makes for some interesting news that makes the rounds when most people are on vacation. Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports has put together a feature ranking the best quarterbacks in the NFL of all time. While Allen is still young and, yes, hasn’t taken his team to the big dance yet, it’s still a bit surprising where he shows up on the roster and to whom he falls.
Bills’ Josh Allen Dissed
DeArdo ranks Brady the No. 1 quarterback to ever play in the NFL. It’s difficult to argue with that. “It’s hard to find anyone who would argue Brady’s standing as the greatest quarterback of all-time,” DeArdo explains. “Brady owns just about every significant NFL passing record, including the career marks for passing yards and touchdown passes.”
He has Joe Montana as the No. 2 best quarterback of all time, stating, “considered the greatest QB of all-time pre Brady, Montana still has the unofficial title as the best QB of the 20th century. Montana’s ‘Joe Cool’ nickname was well earned as he led the 49ers on two of his most famous game-winning drives in NFL history.”
As you may have guessed, Allen is not anywhere on this tally. But, he does get a mention with DeArdo stating, “Only two active quarterbacks made the cut, but it’s safe to assume that Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson and Matthew Stafford, will each crack this list sometime in the near future. Eli Manning will probably crack the list one day as well, especially if he ever receives induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.”
Patrick Mahomes Makes the Cut
What’s a bit heartbreaking is that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes does make the tally, and he comes in at a high No. 7. Sure, Mahomes has great numbers and has won championships, but it’s kind of a dagger in the hearts of the Bills.
“One of just two active players on this list, Mahomes is more than deserving of his top-10 position,” DeArdo notes. “The 29-year-old is already a two-time league and three-time Super Bowl MVP. He has an astonishing 106-27 record as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback that includes a 17-4 postseason mark. Mahomes’ five Super Bowl starts is tied with John Elway for the second-most in history.” Right behind Mahomes is Aaron Rodgers at No. 8.
So, at least DeArdo says that it’s only a matter of time before Allen makes the cut, but it wouldn’t have hurt to include him now.
