Bills QB Josh Allen Sends Bold Message on WR Tyrell Shavers Ahead of Texans Game

Buffalo Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen had nothing but positive things to say about second-year wide receiver Tyrell Shavers during his press conference on Tuesday. Shavers caught a career high four passes for 90 yards and a touchdown in the Bills’ win over the Buccaneers last weekend and filled the injury void at wide receiver.

“[My trust in him is] so high because I’ve watched him for years just come out and work extremely hard,” Allen said of Shavers. “He’s typically one of the last people to leave the practice field, anytime I want to throw extra, he’s always out there. He does the little things the right way, he’s going in and doing some of the dirty work for us.”

With Curtis Samuel, Mecole Hardman, and Dalton Kincaid confirmed out for Buffalo’s TNF game against the Houston Texans and Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman’s statuses still up in the air, Shavers could once again find himself in an elevated role.

Allen Expresses High Level of Trust in Shavers

Although his targets may not show it, Allen has oodles of trust in Shavers to step up whenever his number is called.

“I can continue to say the most positive things about the guy because each and every day, that’s who he is, he’s an extremely positive person, but he works extremely hard,” Allen said. “He’s still learning and growing in this game and it’s been awesome to see how he’s progressed in his career and I still think there’s a lot of room to grow with him.”

Shavers was signed by the Bills as an undrafted free agent back in 2023. Shavers wasn’t a highly touted prospect by any means, but has worked himself into a consistent role with a very good football team in Buffalo.

He spent five years in college at three different schools. He initially played at Alabama, though he only ever caught one pass with the Crimson Tide. He transferred to Mississippi State for his third season but only played in four games, then transferred again to San Diego State for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. At San Diego State, he had 56 receptions and five touchdowns in two years; solid numbers, but only enough for Buffalo to take a flyer on him.

He’s proved his worth to the reigning NFL MVP, and now with a laundry list of injuries, he may be able to prove himself to a national audience on Thursday Night Football in Houston.

Allen Named AFC Player of the Week For Effort Against Tampa Bay

Josh Allen continued to pile accolades as he was named the AFC Player of the Week in week 11. Though there were some rocky patches for him in the 44-32 win over the Buccaneers, Allen finished the day with six total touchdowns, three in the air and three on the ground.

His strong day elevated him back up to third place in MVP odds after taking a dip for a few weeks. He now trails only Matthew Stafford (+135) and Drake Maye (+185), sitting at +475. Colts running back Jonathan Taylor is the next closest at +800, though another strong performance from Allen could make it a three-dog race between himself, Stafford, and Maye.
