Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is sharing praise for his offensive coordinator’s spread-it-around approach — and taking what many see as a shot at a former teammate.
Allen has gotten off to a strong start this season, not losing a turnover through the first three games of the season while leading the Bills to a 3-0 record. The Bills quarterback shared some love for offensive coordinator Joe Brady’s “everybody eats” approach and credited the approach for his lack of turnovers.
Allen may have also taken aim at former wide receiver Stefon Diggs, whose abrupt departure last year led the Bills to take the new approach.
Josh Allen’s Thoughts on What Changes for Bills
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Allen was asked about what has changed in the last year that led him to cut down on turnovers so dramatically. After losing 22 turnovers in 2022 and 18 in 2023, Allen had a career-best eight in 2024 and has yet to lose a turnover this season.
Allen said it is Brady’s “everybody eats” approach that takes pressure off to get the ball to any one player.
“That whole ‘Everybody Eats’ mentality that Joe [Brady] allowed us to take over has allowed me to be free,” Allen said, via reporter Dan Fetes on X. “Not worry so much about where the ball is going.”
Many interpreted Allen’s response as a shot at former teammate Stefon Diggs, who caused tension during his tenure in Buffalo with subtle complaints about his lack of targets. After one of his final games with the Bills in late 2023, Diggs admitted that he was “frustrated” when Allen couldn’t get him the ball.
âIt’s frustrating,â Diggs said, via SI.com. âI gotta do a lot of things to get open, and then a lot of things gotta go right to get the ball, so for me when it doesn’t happen, of course, I’m frustrated. Y’all know how much of a competitor I am. I like to play at a high level and I always want it to happen. And even if it doesn’t when it doesn’t materialize, I definitely get a little discouraged at a moment, but then I shake gotta shake back because I know my team still needs me.â
Stefon Diggs Takes a New Tone
Diggs sparked controversy near the end of his time in Buffalo, blowing up at Allen during a playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in early 2023 and making cryptic comments on social media hinting at discontentment with the team.
The Bills traded Diggs to the Houston Texans early in the 2024 offseason, and after one season there he signed with the New England Patriots. The former All-Pro wide receiver has struck a new tone, telling reporters that he is not concerned about his number of targets.
âComparison is the thief of joy. I canât really think about whatâs going on around me,â Diggs said, via the Boston Herald. âIâll be cheering for my guys. Always clap for everybody around me, even if itâs not for me. I pretty much always been that way. Even if you do want more, whateverâs on your plate, you got to eat it.
