Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen suffered through some uncharacteristic mistakes in Sunday’s loss to the New England Patriots, losing two turnovers during the game — then losing his cool against an opposing player in the final seconds.
Video captured Allen sharing some choice words toward Patriots defenders as the Bills stalled in a late drive, forcing them to kick a game-tying field goal rather than driving for a go-ahead touchdown. The exchange has led to some criticism of Allen, with some calling out the quarterback for his demeanor.
Josh Allen Taking Heat
The broadcast captured Allen removing his helmet after the Bills failed to convert a third-down play with close to two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Bills quarterback appeared to shout some obscenities toward New England players.
Some thought that Allen deserved more criticism than he was given, with some believing that rivals like Patrick Mahomes are held to a higher standard.
“If Mahomes did this, everyone would lose their mind but since Josh is such a loveable loser, it gets pushed aside with no one talking about it,” a fan shared in a post on X.
Many others defended Allen, noting that he has always played with passion. Sunday’s game grew heated at times, with players from both teams engaging in some talking during and after plays.
Bills QB Vows to Improve After Loss
Allen’s fiery attitude did not follow him to the podium after the game, where instead the Bills quarterback was contrite and took blame for the loss.
Allen faulted himself for his two turnovers, an interception in the red zone and a fumble on a botched exchange with tight end Dawson Knox on an end-around.
âWe just played sloppy,â Allen told reporters. âNot gonna win a football game, turning the ball over three times, in our red zone. Gave them one in their red zone⦠We shouldnât have even been in it with three turnovers. So, again, thatâs just piss poor offense.â
Allen also took aim at his team’s play calling, saying they tried to get “too cute” in how they attacked the Patriots defense.
âThere were some other moments where I just feel like maybe we were too cute at times,â Allen added. âAnd just overall, weâve got to look at some things and just be honest with ourselves and learn from it holistically.â
The Bills were briefly the NFL’s only unbeaten team on Sunday after the Philadelphia Eagles lost, but the day ended with the Bills at 4-1. They had a chance to take a three-game lead over the Patriots in the division and still remain a full game ahead, though the Patriots have an early tiebreaker.
The Bills return to action on Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons before heading to a bye week, where they can use time to get healthier. The team has suffered some big losses on defense, with defensive tackle Ed Oliver missing the last four games and rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston still on injured reserve with a knee injury.
