Buffalo Bills fans are holding their breath after rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston went down with a non-contact injury on Tuesday, but the first-round pick may have just delivered a good sign.
Hairston was tripped up during a drill at training camp at St. John Fisher University, prompting a long examination from the team’s medical staff before he was helped off the field. While some expressed fears of a significant injury like a torn ACL, Hairston may have eased some fears late on Tuesday.
Maxwell Hairston’s Injury Update
While there is still no official update on the injury, Hairston took to his Instagram stories on Tuesday to share a picture and what appeared to be a message of relief.
“Beyond blessed,” Hairston wrote. “Thank you God”
While Hairston’s cryptic message did not address the injury, many Bills fans appeared relieved that he may have avoided a more serious situation.
Hairston’s message stood in contrast to some of the more pessimistic messages from his teammates earlier in the day. Speaking to reporters after practice ended, cornerback Christian Benford said he was “sick” about the situation and praying for Hairston’s recovery.
âI was salty, I was upset,â Benford said. âThatâs somebody whoâs a pure-hearted kid. Thatâs someone you work with off the field so much and you put so much time in with them and then they fall like that. Something happening to him ⦠you never want that to happen. You donât even pray that on your worst enemies. Iâm sick about that.â
Fellow cornerback Dane Jackson added that the team prayed for Hairston, adding that his injury appeared to be a freak accident during a non-contact drill.
âWe said a prayer for him and we (tried to) uplift him,â Jackson said. âHope to see him when we get in here and find out everything thatâs going on with him and (hope for) a speedy recovery for him too. Heâs been doing a great job at camp as well.â
The team had not offered an update on Hairston’s injury by the end of the day on Tuesday, but they were expected to offer more details after he had a thorough medical examination.
The Bills have been hit hard by injuries so far through training camp, with several wide receivers also going down with various injuries.
Bills Could Need More Secondary Help
The Bills could still need some help in the secondary if Hairston should miss some time in training camp. While they can elevate internal candidates like Ja’Marcus Ingram, the Bills could also bring in a free agent like Rasul Douglas.
Douglas was a 15-game starter for the Bills last season and remains unsigned after hitting free agency. Bills general manager Brandon Beane said the door remained open for Douglas to return to Buffalo at the right price.
Hairston was expected to compete for the starting spot opposite Benford, though has faced a stiff challenge from returning veteran Tre’Davious White, who was fully healthy for a full offseason for the first time in more than three years.
